Introduction
This essay will examine why performance is necessary in an organisation but often
difficult. The essay will also include the labour process and the disadvantages. Lastly,
reward management will be presented as a motivation factor for the employees.

Performance management can be defined as a process ensuring that an organisations
goals are met through a set of activities in an effective and efficient way (Davies, 2019).
Performance management can also focus on a department, employee, organisation and
the processes involving a particular task (Davies, 2019). Armstrong and Baron claim that
performance management is an effective approach in an organisation as it creates a
strategic and integrated approach which will improve the performance of people working
in them and increasing the formalisation (Armstrong & Baron 1998). By doing these
employees will be developing their teams’ capabilities. This means that there will be
higher expectations of employees (Thompson & McHugh 2009). The reason why
performance management is necessary is because control systems helps to achieve
goals (Davies, 2019), increase revenue and supports workforce planning (Roberts,
2020). These may lead to alienation due to mass production, which the workers have no
sense of belonging, think the job is meaningless, therefore being demotivated. This
could also lead to lack of employee morale, poor quality performance appraisals that are
linked to employees negative attitudes towards work, pay and conditions (Brown et al,
2010; Evans & Tourish, 2017). Another reason why performance management is often a
difficult process in an organisation is because if information has been fabricated or
