Overview of Elizabeth I’s Reign (1558 – 1588)



1558:

- Elizabeth becomes Queen of England following the death of her Catholic half-sister Mary I
(Bloody Mary)
- Elizabeth receives proposals from many foreign kings and princes, including a proposal from
King Phillip II of Spain, who was previously married to Mary I
- Excellent first harvest of Elizabeth’s reign
- High unemployment levels in the cloth trade



1559:

- Elizabeth establishes a Protestant Church in her Religious Settlement and names herself
Supreme Governor of the Church



1561:

- Amy Robsart, wife of Robert Dudley the Earl of Leicester, dies. Elizabeth considers marrying
Dudley, but eventually decides against it



1562:

- Elizabeth contracts the smallpox disease and is critically ill. She recovers
- Parliament requested that Elizabeth marries and names a successor. Elizabeth agrees,
however she then forbids any further mention of the topic



1568:

- The English Merchant John Hawkins’ ships are attacked in the West Indies
- The English retaliate by seizing a Spanish bullion (gold) ship in the English Channel
- Mary Queen of Scots flees from Scotland to Northern England where she is then imprisoned
by Elizabeth



1569:

- Catholic Nobles in the North of England rebel against Elizabeth in an attempt to place Mary
Queen of Scots on the English throne. This rebellion is known as the Revolt of the Northern
Earls. It failed
