Notes on the events which took place during the Revolt of the Northern Earls, the aim of the plot, Mary Queen of Scots' involvement and the threat that the plot posed to Elizabeth. GCSE History Revision.
- The Earls wanted Catholicism restored in England which meant removing Elizabeth from
the throne
- Elizabeth had taken away some land and power away from the Earls which created a more
personal reason for the Revolt
- The governing of the North of England was no longer the responsibility of the Earls
- The Earls wanted to free Mary Queen of Scots from captivity so that she could replace
Elizabeth as Queen
- Elizabeth also refused to name an heir to the throne which created a lot of uncertainty and
political tensions which the Earls wanted to resolve
- The Earls also wanted to get rid of some Elizabeth appointed councillors who they blamed
for their loss of power
- After their involvement to marry Mary to the Duke of Norfolk, they feared imprisonment
from Elizabeth. They might have thought that rebelling against her was the only way to
stop that from happening
Events of the Plot:
- Elizabeth arrested Norfolk after she first heard of the plot
- The Earls pushed ahead with the revolt after hearing the news and headed to Durham
- They reached Durham Cathedral and held Catholic Mass in Latin after destroying all
evidence of Protestantism
- The rebels then continued South
- The revolt was unsuccessful
- Spain's troops never arrived, and the Earls were unable to free Mary Queen of Scots
450 rebels were then executed by Elizabeth
- Westmorland escaped, but Northumberland was captured and executed in York in 1572
- Elizabeth released Norfolk and Mary Queen of Scots remained imprisoned for a further 14
