Unit 2: Leadership and Teamwork.

Different leadership styles used in the public services.

P1: Describe the different leadership styles used in the public services.

Democratic.

Where a group of individuals are guided by a leader who are all involved in making decisions in order
to determine what and how the process should be carried out.

Transactional.

A direct leadership style in which individuals will be motivated through the use of rewards and
punishments.

Laissez – Faire.

An indifferent style of leadership where the leader will trust the team to complete the task.

Authoritarian.

An unambiguous style of leadership in which the group leader will instruct the team members on
what they must do.

Transformational.

A leadership style in which the leaders will support and encourage the team members.

P2: Identify the role of the team leader in the public services.

An army officer would employ an authoritian leadership style as in most cases, they are normally
bossy, loud and obnoxious as they think they are always right and that their idea is the best idea.
They might use this leadership style on a battlefield where soldiers are under fire, there must be a
leader to shout commands and instruct the team on what to do and the team must comply as their
life is on the line.

An officer in the fire service would make use of the democratic leadership style when coming up
with a plan when entering a scene of a fire. To do this, input will be necessary from each of the team
members and it will be need to be discussed within the team in order for the rescue to be as
effective as possible.

A transactional leadership style would be utilized by an officer within any of the public services who
is in charge of training new recruits. This is because the recruits know that if they make a mistake
they will get punished by the leader, therefore they learn not to do anything wrong.

In the fire service, an officer could use the leadership style of Laissez – Faire. The leader would have
a dedicated team they could trust in order for the rescue or operation to run smoothly. An example
of how this would work is if an officer sent their team into a burning building they would be outside
securing said building.

A high ranking army officer may employ a transformational leadership style when in the battlefield
when giving a speech to a group of his/her troops to inspire them and give them a boost of self -
confidence and improve team morale.
