Unit 2: Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques

Review of personal development of scientific skills for lab work:

As a whole, in this unit I have fulfilled a lot of research and several experiments
in order to complete unit 2 practical scientific procedures and techniques
successfully. The techniques I have gained from this unit will benefit me for
when applying for university as the skills gained has provided me with more
independence and confidence when completing any practical work. When
studying practical scientific procedures and techniques, I completed the
practical’s titration, colorimetry, chromatography, and calorimetry. This
required me to use past knowledge of when completing experiments such as
safety, however there where many skills I still needed to develop in order to
complete the experiments independently and accurately. When I evaluate my
performance and my skills, I have concluded that I have gained many new
skills, these will help me to complete other sections of other units on this
course. Some of the main skills I feel I have developed from this unit are:

- Observing, this skill I have picked up when watching the teacher
demonstrate how all of the different equipment work and are calibrated
as some I have never seen or used before.

- Quantifying, this is one of the most important skills in this unit as all
solvents and solutions needed to be measured accurately

- Communication, whilst working with peers this is a strong skill needed as
any information given is clearly understood from the teacher or the lab
book being used; this is essential for making sure the experiment is
being done correctly in the correct order, and so accurate results are
produced.

- Forming conclusions, this skill was developed when looking back at
predictions that was made by the class and comparing them with the
actual results from all the information gathered.

- Interpreting, this skill is used when analysing any of the results or
information given. This skill is used when trying to understand results,
the interpretation was used when trying to support any trends in the
experiment; interpretation was also a skill used when not understanding
why something turned out the way it did in the experiment or why the
experiment turned out like the way it did, so more research was

, directed, and interpreting was used to line up that information found to
the results from the experiment.

There are many skills I have learnt from unit 2 and these will be transferred
onto oncoming units such as unit 3 where I will be able to know the use of the
equipment being used, understand the risks and hazards involved in
experiments, identify strengths and weaknesses of any methods used, any
variables used within an experiment, know how to handle any data collection,
and understand and analyse calculations used within experiments in order to
form a conclusion.

An important skill which I have developed in depth is my awareness for health
and safety, this has been vital in all of unit 2. This has been important in all of
the experiments as when handling different and stronger chemicals then what
I have ever handled before such as at school. They have been more dangerous,
so being aware of the dangers and how to handle them safely as been very
important. Everyone who has completed the practicals in my class including
me and my peer had very good awareness for the dangers and how to stay
safe when completing any experiment in the lab. Another safety awareness
was in the experiment cooling curves as when using a Bunsen burner and
boiling water whilst using it, if any messing around whilst a Bunsen burner was
on is very dangerous and can lead into a major injury. Moreover, if any of the
boiling water spills over this could cause a major injury and could also cause a
slip hazard, so knowing about health and safety is very important when
completing an experiment. Knowing about these hazards and how to stay safe
whilst doing an experiment will help me in my upcoming unit 3 as we will look
into hazards and safety.

At the beginning of the course there was only a few skills I could complete
accurately and independently before completing any experiment in this unit
these were:

- Measuring distances with a ruler.
- Measuring temperature using a liquid thermometer (of a solution).
- Knowing the use of PPE in experiments and its safety.
- Correctly measuring mass of powders, solutions, and any solvents to the
correct decimal place and in grams.
- Using a Pasteur pipette.
