Tehran Conference (November 1943)
● Roosevelt, Stalin and Churchill
● The meeting was fairly successful for Stalin because Roosevelt was ill and mainly sided
with him.
● The US and Britain agreed to open a second front by invading France in May 1944
● US agreed to go to war against Japan once Germany was defeated
● Two consequences were:
○ United Nations would be set up after the war had ended
○ An area of Eastern poland was added to the USSR, increasing Soviet
Expansion.
● Churchill was suspicious of Stalin’s motives in Poland
● Soviet troops might remain in Germany once it was defeated.
Yalta Conference (February 1945)
● Early 1945, Germany was close to defeat by the Allies.
● Conference held to consider what to do after the war; the USSR had a military
advantage as they occupied Eastern Europe and Stalin and Roosevelt got along well.
● They agreed:
○ Allow Governments free elections once freed from German occupation
○ Eastern Europe would be in the “Soviet Sphere of Influence.”
○ Germany would be divided into 4 zones: Britain, France, US and USSR.
● They disagreed:
○ About how Germany would pay the reparations
○ Stalin wanted influence over the Polish Government
● Two consequences were:
○ Berlin and Germany would be divided up
○ UN organisation kept the peace.
What occurred between Yalta and Potsdam (February-July 1945)
● Soviet troops liberated countries in Eastern Europe but didn’t remove their military
presence.
● By July, Soviet troops occupied Latvia, Estonia, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria and
Romania.
● Stalin set up a Communist Government in Poland and ignored Yalta, the Poles and
protests from Britain and the US. He insisted the control was necessary against future
attacks.
Potsdam Conference (July 1945)
● Roosevelt died and was replaced by Truman who distrusted Stalin.
● Halfway through Potsdam, Churchill was replaced by Clement Attlee.
