D1 – Explain the relationship between cells, tissues, organs and organ systems in the organisation
of the human body

Eukaryotic cells contain organelles which perform different functions. When all the organelles work
together to perform their tasks, the cell is fully functioning. When multiple cells fully function, the
human body carries out tasks for it to survive. Secreting proteins are necessary for the human body
to survive, and most organelles in a cell have a task for carrying out this specific function.



The nucleus controls the cells activities and is where the DNA is found. The DNA is what holds all the
information for genetics and cell functionality. The nucleus receives a signal and produces RNA by
transcription which is the start of protein synthesis.

The nucleolus uses proteins and RNA to make subunits of ribosomes which are later needed.

Mitochondria are important for the entire process of protein synthesis and secreting a protein.
Without any mitochondria the cell would have no energy for the organelles to perform their
functions and so protein synthesis wouldn’t even take place without the presence of mitochondria.

Ribosomes help with the formation of amino chains and binding molecules together needed for
protein synthesis. They are the main site of protein synthesis.

The rough endoplasmic reticulum has ribosomes attached to its surface and is where most protein
synthesis happens.

The smooth endoplasmic reticulum detoxifies the cell and synthesises lipids and so doesn’t take any
part with the secretion of a protein.
