Title: CSR in action at a major private sector business
Introduction
In this assignment, the business which I will be discussing is Starbucks. A large coffee
chain which started in America, serving both hot and cold drinks. There are stores in
over 75 countries. Known as the world’s largest coffee house. Using this brand to talk
about how this particular business has had an impact on the community. Finding wider
research to identify the financial side of the company and the diversity policies which
they have. Evaluating the poor corporate governance and weighing up the factors. This
is a large organisation which has an effective corporate responsibility reputation.
20/C. P6 Explain the impact of a selected business’s behavior, and its help in a local
community, on its CSR record.
The Starbucks company which has had a great success over the years and continued to
strive. It focuses on three main factors and they are Environment, Community and
Ethical sourcing. The aim is to have an impact that is positive in these three areas. The
business has community stores, these which partner with the other nonprofits who are
based locally. By having this, the non-profits are aiming to support the community that
they are in and offer a service which the people will benefit from. The company have a
goal that they want to meet and this is to hire people who have a career in military or
veteran. Looking closely at inclusion and diversity in the work environment. Younger
generation can receive training opportunities and on top this, Starbucks have a
foundation set up. Doing this is not only having a positive outlook on the organization,
, but also the people in the community, it is bringing communities together and
strengthening the relationships.
Looking closely at Ethical sourcing is another reason how the behaviors of the company
is reflected in a positive way. Research shows that the business is strict on where they
purchase from and what supplier. Working closely with making sure the tea, cocoa and
coffee is ethically produced. They have a belief which is most of their success coming
from the farmers who are growing the coffee beans and other products. Only purchasing
products that follow a standard ethical procedure. It shows that the business takes into
account how their decisions affect people outside of the company, their concern is to
reduce the environmental impact they are having on the planet in which they refer to as
their most important partner in business. This is being done by staying committed to
recycling and also conserving, such as the water and energy. In whatever Starbucks
chooses to do, in any operation their main priority is to be a company that is
environmentally friendly.
The actions of the company are effective, this has happened by the business choosing to
invest in the communities and also the people who are working closely with the
company. As Starbucks has continuously put its best efforts in making a change for the
community, this has been noticed by the loyal customers and people who have an
interest in the business. It is an advantage that the organization supports issues,
environmental and social. This catches the attention of the consumers and they begin to
look at the company more positively. Not only customers are satisfied, it is the
employees to who see the change and they become advocates for the company.
Starbucks chooses to publish a report every year which includes the impact they have
had and the advantages over this. The goal is to disclose the new strategy for the new
year and be sure that the programs are working along with being effective too. The
business doesn’t choose any CSR strategy, it rather focuses on its programs, measuring
and also evaluating them. The CSR is implemented well in the company and this is why
it has a huge impact on the business itself. It is the reason behind why Starbucks has
strived and managed to reach all their goals.
The business generally likes to invest in the programs that help towards social
development and economic issues in the local communities. Starbucks also chooses to
collaborate with the organizations that have experience in working with the farming
communities. Supporting them by giving loans, expanding the ethical side and improving
this so the programs are at a high standard. It aims to continue the supply of the quality
made coffee. Whilst maintaining stronger farmer communities. This has invested a lot of
money in activities such as C.A.F.E. and this helps towards improving the lives of the
farmers and along with that, continuing to have the supply of the quality coffee. The
