Lady Capulet Basics:
Juliet’s mother
Married young
Eager to see her daughter marry Paris to gain wealth and status
Not effective as a mother - asks the nurse to accompany her when
she tries to speak to Juliet
Relies on the Nurse
Materialistic
Goes against Juliet to avoid Capulet’s rage
Love
Her attitude towards love is that it is for wealth and status with a cold
attitude to marriage and love. She never thinks about Juliet’s thoughts or
feelings only that she should be obedient.
A woman’s role
Her loyalty to Capulet even through the argument and choosing his side
without him even asking her suggests that this is what woman in the
Elizabethan era would have done. The uncaring nature of Lady Capulet
to her own daughter shows her detachment and fear of the patriarchal
society she resides in.
She wants a private conversation with Juliet - dismissing the Nurse so
that she and Juliet may “talk in secret”. However, she calls the Nurse
back as perhaps she is aware that the Nurse has a closer bond and may
feel uncomfortable with being alone with Juliet.
Lady Capulet is excited about Paris - “Verona’s summer hath not such a
flower” (Act 1 Scene 3) Juliet’s answers remain non-committal implying
distance, and/or that Lady Capulet is trying too hard.
Lady Capulet even tries to find common ground with Juliet by saying. “By
my count/ I was your mother much upon these years, That you are
mowing a maid” (Act 1 Scene 3) but Juliet doesn’t share her enthusiasm
for marriage and motherhood.
