Unit 8 Promoting Public Health Assignment 2

Health promotion helps individuals to increase power over their own health. It covers a wide range of
social and environmental intervention designed to benefit and safeguard the health and quality of life of
individual people by addressing and avoiding the cause of ill health, not just focusing on treatment and
cure (WHO 2016). The aim of the health promoters is to improve the health of the people and
population. The World Health Organization (WHO), governments, local authorities and other research
departments are some of the few health promoters. In order to promote health, governments aim to
promote the health of their own population and to minimize health inequalities.

Some of the Global Health promoters:

World Health Organization (WHO) the primary purpose is to coordinate international health withing the
national framework. It guides the health sector and encourages safe living around the world, partnering
with global governments and health agencies to help countries improve healthcare systems. The WHO
collects the information from other countries experiencing health problems (BTEC Booklet 2021). For
example, In Greenwich the rates of prevalence of obesity are high in children at the age of 10-11 years,
as the rates are 23.2 in the region and 20.2 in England, the Greenwich health profile shows that the
rates in Greenwich for childhood obesity is getting significantly worse than England.

Child Family Health International (CFHI) The CFHI is a non- government organization specializing in
public health education services that educate families across the globe in low and middle- incomes
countries. CFHI volunteers work with local health practitioners to deliver services in community clinics
that provide health and safety, pediatrics, nursing and treatment, and cover many other local and
national concerns (BTEC Booklet 2021).

The Department of Health (DOH) The Health Department seeks to help people live longer in a healthier
way. In England, they are responsible for health and care. They ensure that, along with compassion,
respect and integrity, people have the resources and treatment they need. They are responsible for
supporting and advising minister, as they help deliver policies that delivers the government's aims. Their
priorities are to keep people safe, healthy and independent; they also support the NHS to ensure that
they deliver high quality (GOV 2021)

Health promotion campaign – Change4life

, Change4life is England's first ever national social marketing campaign to reduce obesity in children, they
seek to guarantee that parents have the appropriate resources and tools to make better decisions for
their children. Change4life offers a free service which provides healthier recipes for children to protect
them from obesity. Change4life is now a trusted and a well-known brand that Is associated with healthy
eating by 97 percent of mothers with children the age of 5-11 (Change4life 2021). Change4life was
introduced in 2009 its purpose was to inspire people to do exercise to promote healthy eating and to be
able to make sure that the public are aware of the risks of being obese. Change4ife had mentioned that
they only have a single aim which is to motivate individuals and support others who are trying to make a
change for their lifestyle. Change4life is a trusted which is being used by 97% of mothers with children
the ages of 5-11 (Public health England 2021).

P5/6

The 2 approaches for health promotion are:

Identifying most at risk – There are 3 groups of society who are more at risks, which are children,
unemployed and the elderly. Children are identified as most at risk as they are targeted for wellness
promotion programs when they are considered as young enough to develop positive health and lifestyle
patterns and to reduce risky behaviors in the future. Therefore, there are programs which help to
protect children from risks such as change4life and children and young people’s health outcomes forum
(CYPHOF). Unemployed are also identified as most at risk as people who are unemployed have a higher
risk of having an ill mental health this is because they may feel like they aren't valued and become
depressed, they won't be eating healthy or exercising which means they have a high risk of conditions
such as obesity. Older people are also at risk as they are vulnerable and because some elderly people
can't do certain things such as exercise because their bones are delicate which means they have a higher
chance of injuring themselves. Therefore, because they cannot do physical activities, they have a higher
chance of being at risk of illness and diseases or even injuries. However, the NHS advice the elderly to do
light activities such as, getting up and making coffee. They also advice to do moderate aerobic activity
which is, riding bike for example. Or there is also vigorous intensity activity which for example is jogging
or running. These 3 have different intensity in the activity therefore all elderlies won't be able to
perform these (NHS 2019).

Children can adapt and can make healthier decisions for their own lifestyle choices; therefore, they are
at more risks of obesity or other conditions. This is because they tend to eat fast foods which are
cheaper and easily located near schools. This, therefore, increases the risks of conditions, however
change4life can help children to make better life choices, such as eating healthier foods. Schools can
help to promote this and ensure that secondary schools are selling healthy foods to ensure that they
aren't eating unhealthy foods. Change4life can also give recipes for parents to make healthy foods this
will also ensure that the parents are able to make healthy foods. Change4life also ensures that children's
height and weight are healthy to reduce the rates of obesity, if a parent is worried about their child the
website has a link to find the nearest GP, therefore the parent will be able to get additional support
from a professional. For children who might not get physical activity or live-in deprived areas won't be
able to do exercise outside due to the environment, therefore, change4life has 10 minutes shake up
games for children to do at home. This can encourage children as it is based on movies which have been
made the children are able to choose a movie of their liking and play the activities which have been
provided therefore this reduces the risks of obesity.
