P5:
The inequalities that affect the wellbeing and safety of service users' needs to be found by health and
social care professionals. Knowing which individuals are most vulnerable to health and social inequalities
and why health should use their services to address the needs of all services consumers. Separate groups
of society can experience diverse types of inequality such as:
− Prejudice
Prejudice is an opinion or belief of a social community that is not founded on reasons or facts,
disadvantaged groups are usually the subjects of prejudice. Prejudiced views are always negative
therefore are focused on a social groups very oversimplified view, an example would be a nun could have
cover from head to toe to be faithful to God, however when a Muslim girl does this, people may prejudge
her negatively. This means that they may be more cautious of her, or less likely to become friends. One of
the effects of prejudice is that can make the individuals feel worthless and less important therefore it will
bring their self-esteem down. Racism is also an example of prejudice; therefore, prejudice causes barriers
between different groups this causes the groups to not be able to do certain opportunities for the
individuals. This can influence the individuals as the barriers which have been cause can limit the
individuals from achieving the most they can.
Prejudice has been something which has been around for many years, for example, the black community
have been facing racism and slavery since 1619 In North America, the historians had estimated that there
was seen 6 to 7 million enslaved people who were from the African continent (History 2021). Till 2021
there are still people who are being racist towards the black community. This has a significant impact on
the whole of the black community, as they might seem like they cannot do certain things which can be a
barrier that stops them from doing opportunities. However there had been new laws which had ensured
that no one regardless of their ethnicity should be treated differently. In the news there had been reports
on American policemen who have killed individuals of the black community, one of the main individuals
who had made the biggest awareness is George Floyd was killed by a police officer when he was arrested
on the street and was killed by a police officer standing on his neck. There had been awareness that the
black community was treated differently compared to the white community there had been a BLM
protest. most of the black community don’t feel safe around police in America because it isn't an equal
community, this will have a negative effect because they will not use the services which are available for
them in society.
M3: prejudice would have had a significant impact on the black community as during the 1619, Africans
had been seized and were forced to be slaves, overtime this had changed as due to discrimination as
centuries had past society learned to treat each other with equality (google 2021). One example would be
Black History Month, schools now take days during BHM and remind students of these times. However,
there is still racism which still carries on for example, during 2020 George Floyd was arrested by an
American police officer and had been put on the ground, the police officer had put his knee on his neck
which George had lost consciousness, after a few minutes a witness had told the officers that he was
unresponsive however they didn’t move which caused the death of George Floyd. Due to this event which
had occurred in America most countries such as England had protested all around to ensure that George
Floyd had justice, which he did (google 2020). The impact a significant impact on the Black community
as they are more likely to experience abuse from strangers or police officers.
