Summary
The death of the dealer describes the conflict between 63-year-old William
"Willy" Loman and his 34-year-old son Biff. Willy Loman is an internally torn
man whose life for him is mixed up between the past and the present. In several
scenes he talks to people present only in his imagination or there are flashbacks,
sometimes the two are intertwined. Willy's son Biff never forgave his father for
cheating on his mother once with another woman on a business trip. That is why
he does not pass school exams, does not go to university and often changes jobs
to make a living. As the drama ends, their conflict escalates, and finally Biff
shows his father how much he loves him. It challenges him to accept truth and
reality and then goes away for longer. Willy Loman decides to commit suicide
so that his poor family, especially Biff, can receive a paycheck from his life
insurance following an alleged car accident. His late brother Ben, whom he
admires as a father but whom he barely knew and with whom he "talks"
repeatedly in his mind reminds him of his intention. The drama ends with Holy
Mass. For Willy's soul. Only his family and his richer old friend Charley are at
the funeral. The book ends with Linda's widow in Willie's final monologue, in
which she describes the end of billing problems and wonders why Willy took
his own life.
