Module 1: Organizational Leadership Trends

Selected Reading: The Front-Line Leader: Building a High-Performance Organization from

the Ground Up by Chris Van Gorder.

Summarize each trend and its impact on society as supported by each publication.
In the selected reading “The Front-Line Leader: Building a High-Performance
Organization from the Ground Up”, Chris Van Gorder talks about his experience of starting
from a police office and becoming a CEO. In his time of being a police officer he was injured
and had to retire early. This led him to a security director position that would change his life
forever. He mentions a time when a CEO would not even make eye contact with him which
instilled in him a sense of unappreciation. Using this he developed a philosophy of people first
which would ultimately help him claim his throne as the CEO of Scripps.

Summarize risks described in each publication that are associated with each trend’s

implementation, including the likelihood, severity, and mitigation strategies for each of the

risks identified.
Some of the risks that come with the people first mentality are a decrease in
performance and complacency. It is believed by some that if employees have no fear of losing
their jobs then they will become complacent and less efficient. It is important to understand that
is not the case. Yes, people can become complacent in their jobs but as a leader of the people it
is your job to help set goals and inspire people to not become complacent. When you are
treating people as equals and putting their needs first you are inspiring them. That in itself will
mitigate the risks that come with this approach.

Describe how each trend applies to the experiences you have had in your academic or

professional life.
The main trend that stuck out that I can relate to is zero layoffs. With the recent
coronavirus pandemic I was able to see this firsthand. My employer despite the financial stability
of the country decided that we would not lay off any employees. This was not an easy task to

, accomplish and required the commitment of everyone. However it was very easy to relate to this
event as it was going on because almost everybody in the company was affected or knew
somebody who is affected by coronavirus. When you know that your employer stands behind
you and will make sure you have food on your table, you have a heightened sense of wanting to
give back.

Justify how aspects of each trend can be implemented in an organization, using

research to support your claims.
As we talked about above the main trend that companies like to get behind is avoiding
layoffs. This can be implemented in many ways such as training employees and allowing them
the opportunity to move around in the company. Gorder goes on to explain this further in the
following, “Another way we avoid layoffs and build loyalty is by encouraging staff members to
constantly learn and grow as professionals. After all, an employee who has developed new skills
is easier to reassign than one who has performed the same job for twenty-five years.” (Gorder,
2014)

Identify the indicators of successful application of each trend, including any

organizational strategies, goals, or key performance indicators (KPIs) that would be

positively affected if the trend were successfully implemented in an organization.
One of the most beneficial KPI‘s that I have seen, and one that my current employer
uses, is pulse checks. Pulse checks are designed to get a general feeling from employees of how
they are feeling and how valuable they see their work day-to-day.This critical KPI allows us to
see exactly where problems may lie and how we can adjust our workflow to keep employees at
maximum efficiency and happiness.

Evaluate the short-term benefit or long-term application, the level of market applicability, and

organizational relevance for each trend, providing details from each publication to support

your claims.
The best benefit that comes to mind is the sense of worth and satisfaction you will
receive by helping someone in need. This is a very personal feeling that can also trickle down to
the company and overall increase the meaning of the work that is completed each day. Gorder
explains this in the following statement, “The most obvious and important benefit is the sense of
satisfaction you get from helping someone who needs it. Beyond that, leading a relief mission is
