The Great Gatsby – Chapter Summaries

Chapter 1

 Introduction to characters in the story – Nick Carraway, Tom Buchanan, Daisy Buchanan,
Jordan Baker and, briefly, Gatsby.
 Carraway describes his past and how he ended up in New York/Long Island.
 Carraway appears to be obsessed with Gatsby and taken in by him.
 The settings of East Egg and West Egg and how they contrast.
 Through Carraway’s eyes, we see how the Buchanan’s appear outwardly to be a content
family, however there is turmoil bubbling underneath as Tom has ‘a woman in New York’
and Daisy is all too aware of this.
 Quotes: ‘I’m inclined to reserve all judgements’
‘I snobbishly repeat’
‘Gatsby, who represented everything for which I have an unaffected scorn.’
‘Extraordinary gift for hope’
‘It is what preyed on Gatsby, what foul dust floated in the wake of his dreams’
‘Her face was sad and lovely with bright things’
‘Arrangement of notes that will never be played again’
‘Dominance over his face’
‘Cruel body’ which ‘is capable of enormous leverage’

Chapter 2

 We are introduced to the Valley of Ashes, the eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg and Myrtle’s
apartment in New York.
 We are introduced to Myrtle (Tom’s mistress) and George Wilson, who live above the garage
in the Valley of Ashes.
 Myrtle has dreams of grandeur and stuffs her tiny apartment with ‘tapestried furniture
entirely too large for it’.
 Tom is shown to be violent as he breaks Myrtle’s nose at the end of this chapter.
 Quotes: ‘A desolate area of land’
‘Ash-grey men’
‘But his eyes, dimmed a little by many paintless days, under sun and rain, brood on
over the solemn dumping ground’
‘Throwing a regal homecoming’

Chapter 3

 Gatsby’s parties – use of synaesthesia in description e.g. ‘yellow cocktail music’, ‘warm
darkness’, and ‘pale gold odour’.
 Our first proper introduction to Gatsby – before this point he has been described only
through rumour and speculation.
 Delayed meeting – it is not clear to us until after a few moments that Nick is talking to
Gatsby.
 Quotes: ‘he grew more correct as the fraternal hilarity increased’
