Assignment 2, Part 2.2
Three Activities for exploiting the authentic text with advanced students

A) A dictionary activity (see Unit 2) – either an activity which could be used for vocabulary pre-
teaching or one which could be used as a follow-up for further vocabulary development.

Name of Activity: Call My Bluff (modified and adapted to the specificities of the described class)

How Long the Activity would Take: 1’ (instructions) + 4’ (definitions) + 7’ (peer-correction)
Total 12’
Aims:
To enable students to use a dictionary efficiently
To engage their interest and pre-teach vocabulary
To enable them to peer-correct

Teacher’s Instructions:
*Use the vocabulary cards, each containing 3 of the 12 vocabulary items.
*Divide the students in 4 groups of 3. (the assignment guide says a class of 12 while some documents say 15,
for the activities I’ll go with 12 students)
* Tell each group to choose a card. (they will only see the back of the cards)
* Ask them to try to come up with their own definitions for each word/phrase/expression they
have on their card. They should write them down. (4’)
* When done, ask the groups to swap their cards and then look the words/expressions up in the
dictionary and correct if their definitions do not match.
* Let each group present the definitions of the words they have.

Materials:
* 4 Vocabulary cards
* Dictionary
* Internet connection.
* Make sure students have smartphones
* Dictionaries (write the links on the board beforehand)

B) An activity which requires students to use online resources. (See Unit 10) You MUST provide a
student worksheet which MUST give examples of the websites students could use for this
activity.

Name of Activity: Exploration Time (made-up name; this activity is by my own design)

How Long the Activity would Take: 13’

Aims:
To enable students to use online resources.

, To familiarise students with some cultural sites in the UK.
To show students how to use Google Maps in order to navigate and use public transport in the UK.
To describe how to get from point A to point B and recycle related vocabulary.

Teacher’s Instructions:
*Make sure everyone has a smartphone and good internet connection.
*Divide students into pairs.
*Give them either handout A or B; (1’)
*One person in each pair needs to find the locations where the Crown was filmed. The other needs
to find how to get there using public transport.
*The one looking for the places will note them on handout A, while the other will use handout B to
note the type of transport they need to use to get there. (8’)
(e.g. take bus number 3 to get to location X where you’ll take bus number 41 etc.)
*When done, the student with the itinerary will explain to their partner how to get to place X. (4’)

Materials:
*(6x of each) Handouts A & B with suggested websites – resources.
*Individual smartphones.
*Internet connection.
