1003PY CW2 AbstractsToys and Gender Preference:
Gender preference was demonstrated in an observational study in which 20 young children,
boys and girls aged between 19 and 58 months old, were given free choice over the toys they
would play with. A box filled with various toys was presented to them giving them the option
to play with either “gender consistent” or “gender inconsistent” toys. Choices and results of
seconds played with each toy were then recorded in a table and a mean time of the dependent
variable was calculated. Time sampling was utilised to give accurate times of gender
consistent and inconsistent play. It was predicted that children will spend significantly more
time playing with gender-consistent toys than with gender-inconsistent toys. The results of
this study supported the hypothesis as children played considerably longer with gender
consistent toys across the board both boys and girls. Both the boys and the girls had a greater
mean time of playing with gender consistent toys than inconsistent toys. Hasset et al (2008)
found the same results when completing a similar study on rhesus monkeys instead of
children. The issue is raised when children believe they can’t or shouldn’t play with gender
inconsistent toys. The findings demonstrate that such preferences can develop without
explicit gendered socialization.
