, A level Specimen Practice Paper 1
4 (a) Study Fig. 4, atmospheric CO2 changes 1700-2015. Suggest how the changing CO2
concentrations are shown in Fig. 4 influence global management strategies for the carbon
cycle. [4]
Before the late 20th century humans were unaware of the impact of anthropogenic
atmospheric carbon would have and so no global management strategies were used to
combat rising carbon. As seen on the graph the early 20th-century industrial revolution led
to a shallow increase in CO2. However, it was since 1958 that there was a steep exponential
rise in CO2, likely due to the baby boom, globalisation, and increased transport. As
anthropogenic carbon continues to increase stricter targets to reduce emissions such as the
Kyoto protocol, the 2016 Paris climate accord, and COP 21 to remove the excess carbon.
Furthermore, there should be a prioritisation of renewables to reduce further dioxide
emissions to reduce the steepness of the CO2 in the atmosphere. There is a steep increase
in CO2 concentration in 1960.

(b) Explain three benefits of mapping rates of deforestation using Geographical
Information Systems (GIS). [3]
1. With GIS you can compare two different data sets for deforestation (such as 2000 and
2015) and compare and find differences in deforestation over time.
2. GIS data allows you to be able to establish relationships and find hotspots on where
most deforestation is occurring.
3. GIS provides accurate results which can be used for policymaking
(b) Examine the significance of the role of vegetation in linking the water and carbon
cycles. [10]
