This report reflects upon the learning of student Frances Kenyon in the module Environmental
Management BHT4021. It discusses learning from four group tasks undertaken during various
seminars looking at: potential ‘fixes’ to urban air pollution; the FLICC model (Van Der Wiel,
2015); the mistake sequence and the Sustainable Development Goals (United Nations, 2019).
Firstly, the report describes the findings of the group regarding the reduction of urban air
pollution including the introduction of electric cars. The group discussed how less developed
countries may lack the necessary infrastructure for electric cars, meaning appropriate
technology for the problem and country should be considered when ‘fixing’ environmental
issues.
Secondly, the FLICC model is defined, and applied to a blog post by Jeff Id (Id, 2008). The
tactics of sceptics can be paralleled to those used by the tobacco industry in the 1970s to hide
the truth from the public (Kenner, 2014). The conclusion is drawn that a narrative approach is
effective when convincing sceptics of the true scale of climate change.
Thirdly, the mistake sequence was applied to the NHS blood scandal of the 1990s (Triggle,
2018). The group concluded that while human errors are inevitable, the influence of business
priorities can result in the situation worsening because of a cover up.
Finally, the use of SDGs in various countries is discussed the possibility that SDGs would be
more effective if more were done to raise their awareness is discussed as they are applicable to
all areas of welfare, economy and business (United Nations, 2019).
Each topic is explored through one of four lenses
environmental policies and regulations
the effects of culture on engagement with sustainability issues
media and business’ response to sustainability
responses to the sustainability agenda.
Finally, the report highlights the main areas of personal and professional development of the
student which are how knowledge gained can be applied in the work-place and the challenges
associated with the creation of solutions to complex environmental problems and the barriers to
such solutions.
