equality when they are looking after the service users.
Communication skills- communicating with service users, colleagues and other
professionals, e.g. clarifying information, questioning, active listening and responding,
tone of voice and language and responding to difficult situations.
Explain why this skill is used by professionals in the case studies to promote equality for
their service users. E.g. observing change in a service users behaviour etc.
Health and social care professionals promote equality using specific skills and personal attributes. Having
good personal attributes (like being compassionate, thoughtful, friendly, and trustworthy) mean that health
and social care settings are more inclusive. It also means professionals understand and value the diversity
within each setting whether it is a GP surgery or a hospital. For example, professionals would be respectful
toward Martin acknowledging his abilities and difficulties and help him to feel more confident. For Nusrat,
professionals should be patient and understand it may take a longer time for her to answer any questions due
to her learning difficulties. Whereas professionals treating Brenda would take into account her mental health
and treat her with compassion, therefore, understanding how she feels.
Additionally, professionals adopt the 6C’s to promote equality in health and social care; these are basic
values that influence how professionals treat service users and are said to be essential to providing quality
care. These values are a national strategy (called ‘Compassion in Practice’) for nurses, midwives as well as
all care staff. They take into account the feelings of the service users and analyse how to give them the best
treatment possible for example giving them more power over their treatment or considering their working
hours and making an appointment to suit them.
Although there are many values to follow, they are all vital and work cohesively to create a workforce that truly
values their patients. These six values include care, compassion, competence, communication, courage, and
commitment.
