1.1 Describe the duties and responsibilities of own work role


I am a nursing assistant in a hospital.

My duty is providing essential nursing care under the supervision of the registered nurse,
including:

 assisting with washing, dressing and toileting of patients
 assisting with the mobility of patients using hoist, zimmer frames, wheelchairs and
other transfer equipment to safely manoeuvre adult patients
 documenting all care given in their care records in a legible, timely and accurate
manner
 delivering meals and providing drinks to patients and assisting with feeding as
required
 monitoring their dietary intake and weight them on admission then later once a week
 monitoring and recording patient observations and reporting any changes in their
condition immediately and accurately to the RN
 providing and maintaining a safe and comfortable environment for all patients and
visitors
 escorting patients to associate departments as required, e.g. X-ray, CT or ultrasound
 receiving confidential and sensitive information and dealing with it according to the
Trust Policy
 reporting any complaints, incidents, accidents or safeguarding issues to the nurse in
charge of the ward and completing the appropriate documentation
 answering the ward telephone and relaying messages to patients, the nurse in charge or
other members of the multi-disciplinary team
 attending statutory mandatory training courses and staff meetings in line with the Trust
Policy
 taking personal responsibility for own development and updating
 attending annual Performance Development Review and recognising areas of
development required
 performing last offices

, A nursing assistant’s role also includes the ’6 C’s which are: care, compassion, competence,
communication, courage, commitment and confidentiality. In addition to this the nursing
assistant will need to be fit for work, she will need to work with precision, and they will need
to have the ability to ask open questions to gain more information when required to do so.
They will need to be able to show and demonstrate active listening skills as well.

The nursing assistant will need to have the understanding and capabilities to not bring her
own problems to work and allow her own thoughts to cloud her judgment whilst working.,
and finally the nursing assistant will need to work with a vocation and loves her job, and take
her roles and responsibilities seriously as she is working with vulnerable people.



1.2 Explain expectations about own work role as expressed in relevant standards



Agreed ways of working are essential pieces of information that support me in my role and
enable me to work professionally and securely.

My job description states that I have certain responsibilities to my patients and my colleagues,
this includes generic competencies, clinical and communicational skills, together with training
responsibilities.

My responsibilities are:

 Arriving at the ward in time, minimum 5 minutes before my each shift
 Professional appearance: I have to wear my nursing assistant uniform ensuring it is
clean and smooth together with my ID badge, additionally I have to comply with
the ’bare below the elbow’ rule
 Attending the handover and understand it well
 Asking or seeking help if I am not sure
 Gaining consent of a patient before acting in their best interest, unless having
evidence that the person lacks theecapacity to make decisions for themselves
 Ensuring that my communication is efficient, understandable and professional
 Giving relevant information to my patients to help with making a decision
 Supporting them to be in an environment that is free from prejudice
 Providing high quality of care and supporting to meet the needs of the individuals
 Reducing the risk of harm, abuse or neglect
 Involving and respecting my patients in any decision affecting their care and
support
 Reporting things that I feel are not right, illegal or if anyone at work neglects their
duties
