South Africa during the 1960-1980s Serious state oppression through assassinations, south African
defence force, imprisonment limited protests
Media was limited
Poqo (PAN) and Umkhonto weSizwe were exiled and
imprisoned
During the 1970s, black populations in townships grew and
conditions worsened. Services were unavailable, lack of jobs
with long hours and poor pay.
In Durban and Pinetown protests started at Coronation
Brickyard that built to 20000 people but trade unions were not
legal
ANC and Pac were exiled and worked underground but
struggled to find places in other countries until 1975
(independence) because they were seen as communist.
Development of Black Consciousness Movement
Black students had developed a set of ideas that arose
because of unequal and poor conditions in “Bush colleges”.
They had a limited curicculim, under qualified teachers and
rural facilities.
Black Consciousness developed as a new idea and philosophy
that 1. Promoted black heritage and culture 2. Raised self-
respect and confidence in black people 3. Stopped work with
NUSAS and rather educated whites on evils of apartheid 4.
Promote unity amongst blacks to fight apartheid
Steve Biko formed SASO (south African student organisation)
in 1968 to promote BCM in students
