 Serious state oppression through assassinations, south African
defence force, imprisonment limited protests
 Media was limited
 Poqo (PAN) and Umkhonto weSizwe were exiled and
imprisoned
 During the 1970s, black populations in townships grew and
conditions worsened. Services were unavailable, lack of jobs
with long hours and poor pay.
 In Durban and Pinetown protests started at Coronation
Brickyard that built to 20000 people but trade unions were not
legal
 ANC and Pac were exiled and worked underground but
struggled to find places in other countries until 1975
(independence) because they were seen as communist.

Development of Black Consciousness Movement
 Black students had developed a set of ideas that arose
because of unequal and poor conditions in “Bush colleges”.
They had a limited curicculim, under qualified teachers and
rural facilities.
 Black Consciousness developed as a new idea and philosophy
that 1. Promoted black heritage and culture 2. Raised self-
respect and confidence in black people 3. Stopped work with
NUSAS and rather educated whites on evils of apartheid 4.
Promote unity amongst blacks to fight apartheid
 Steve Biko formed SASO (south African student organisation)
in 1968 to promote BCM in students
