,Abstract:
In many countries including the UK, marital rape only became illegal in the early 1990s.
Despite the increased recognition and interest from numerous scholars in Criminology, the
literature in this area remains sparse and insufficient. This dissertation provides a
comprehensive analysis of the current state of marital and stranger rape literature. Firstly,
analysing the definitions, laws and theories of rape. Secondly, the psychological implications
of marital and stranger rape are reviewed, including statistics and a critical evaluation of the
findings. Secondary research is used to gather all the relevant information for this
dissertation. The aim of this dissertation was to highlight the seriousness of marital rape as
opposed to stranger rape, in terms of prevalence, the psychological implications, as well as
drawing attention to the limitations of existing research. Findings showed that victims of
marital and stranger rape victims in fact undergo similar psychological implications, however
it is the laws in different countries that pay less recognition to marital rape victims in
comparison to stranger rape victims.
