Bigdata Analytics Benefits and Challenges for Manufacturing IoT
Spring 2021 - Data Science & Big Data Analy (ITS-836-M50) - Full Term
University of the Cumberlands
Introduction
Internet of Things and Bigdata are the bleeding-edge technologies that complement each
other for enhancing the value of one another in various sectors. ToT devices is nothing but a
series of connected devices that share the data dynamically to perform specific actions via the
Internet. In the past few decades, the manufacturing of IoT devices has increased exponentially,
but only in the last decade, the efficiency and the security of these devices have improved
because of the increased dependency on big data analytics. IoT devices produce massive
volumes of data, and the manufacturers have to use that data to convert it into manufacturing
knowledge by closing the loop. This would also help the manufacturing systems to be highly
responsive to the customer needs and to withstand the competition in the market. And thereby
improving the profitability of the businesses (Barton et al., 2018). The IoT terminology may feel
futuristic, but it is known for making our lives normal going and is already in our everyday lives.
This technology is simple yet sophisticated. If you are using LED Lights, Cars, Washing
Machines, and TVs that are connected to your Phones or any other connected device, then those
devices are nothing but IoT devices. Industrial IoT is nothing but digitalizing the manufacturing
of IoT devices (Chen, 2019).
Bigdata analytics plays an important role in the processes of manufacturing the Internet of
Things related smart devices. Industrial IoT consists of many sensors that are interconnected with
each other for collecting essential data from the production process. It then leverages
, sophisticated software in the Cloud for converting the collected data into beneficial information
regarding the manufacturing operations' efficiency. In this research paper, the benefits and the
challenges of the Bigdata analytics for manufacturing smart connected devices related to the
Internet of things will be discussed.
Benefits of Bigdata Analytics in Manufacturing IoT
Because of the rapid growth in the use of smart connected devices, the consumers of IoT
devices are demanding improved efficiency and decreased costs. Manufacturers of IoT devices
now a days have to heavily depend on the consumers’ behaviors with these devices and the usage
patterns to improve their customer satisfaction. This can only be possible by leveraging the
massive amounts of data that is being generated and shared by these smart devices through the
Internet. Not only that the manufacturers have to collect this data but also apply bigdata analytics
on it to transform it into knowledgeable information to improve the efficiency of the production
processes.
There are numerous benefits in using the bigdata analytics for the manufacturing of the
IoT devices such as easy of managing the supply chains, refinement of complicated
manufacturing processes, improve the sophisticated integration procedures, predict the design
changes, understand the customer needs of a device, reduce the manufacturing costs, reduce the
costs involved in managing the industrial wastes and various other advantages. The latest trend in
manufacturing, smart manufacturing, is a concept of using collaborative and completely
integrated manufacturing systems that would respond dynamically to the various conditions and
supply chain status in the smart factories and to the rapidly changing customer demands. Also,
the IoT manufacturers can also use bigdata analytics to predict external factors like weather,
global and local politics, business competitors, market trends, consumer behaviors and demands,
future predictions, and technology advancements.
