Unit 2: Equality, diversity and rights

M2- Assess the influence of a recent national policy initiative promoting anti-
discriminatory practice

M3- Discuss difficulties that may be encountered when implementing anti-
discriminatory practice in health and social care setting

The human rights act 1998 influences anti-discriminatory practice in health and social
care setting by promoting human rights to every single person even if they have a
disability or any other impairments. It makes sure that people know that they are entitled
to any of the human rights and this is very important to know if you are in a health and
social care setting. It is important to ensure that people are treated fairly, equally, are
respected and treated with dignity.

In some cases in health and social care settings, such as hospitals, care homes and
day centres, certain individuals may receive more attention than other individuals
whether it is medical attention or just the attention of a staff member in general. This
can have a negative effect on the initiative because it is suppose to promote being
treated equally and fairly, but some individuals may feel marginalised, but it is essential
to make sure that every person using the service is treated the same and treated with
the same level of care and treatment because the Human Rights act says that every
person is entitled to a “Right to life” which also means they mustn't go through any type
of discrimination.

The principles of the care value base are: the promotion of anti-discriminatory practice,
the promotion and support of dignity, independence and safety, respect for, and
acknowledgement of personal beliefs and individual identity, the maintenance of
confidentiality, protection of harm and abuse, the promotion of effective communication
and relationships and lastly, the provision of personalised care. These are the principles
that care workers should follow and work by, which also means that they must put the
service user first and meeting their individual needs and wants as it is their number one
priority to provide high quality care to service users. They also need to make sure they
give them active support as it will benefit them physically, emotionally and socially. It
benefits them because the staff use a person- centred approach towards them which
can make them feel valued and motivated to do things with the support of a service
provider. Service providers should also ensure that they give the service user free will
so they know they are still capable of doing things and make decisions for themselves.
This helps to empower the individual.
