Describe examples of how the internet is used by selected, contrasting
businesses.
eBay & John Lewis
Selling goods and services
-When it comes to selling goods and services john Lewis uses the internet to engage with their
customers by allowing customers to be aware of the products in which they offer and have
available example ranging from popular kitchen appliances, perfumes and electrical items.
Whilst eBay is a multinational e-commerce company meaning they already operate online
means they don’t have to find ways to engage with customers as the target audience already
have an understanding of how to access their services. eBay sell a wider range of products
ranging from home and garden equipment, clothing and car accessories.
Promotion
-Promotion is very important for john Lewis and eBay as both businesses can use the internet to
promote their goods and services which can also be labeled as online marketing which is the
process of promoting their services and products using the internet to help drive traffic towards
the business and increase sales, examples of promotions I can list are displays advertising, social
media pages such as Instagram and Facebook and lastly video advertising.
Communication
-The use of communication over the internet is a very reliable source for eBay and john Lewis to
communicate important information across, examples of communication that I would use is
employees being able to communicate smoothly with one another of the internet through the
use of group calls or group emails as I feel that this helps to ensure every member in different
hierarchies of the business are able to communicate and spread important information such as
the aims and objectives of targets out to different departments to ensure everyone is aware of
the tasks which must be completed.
Delivery of Customer service duties
-Customer service is very important for a business as the customers are the drive of the
business and they are the soles who keep the business operating which is why it is important
that both eBay and John Lewis can always offer urgent customer service 24/7 which is why one
smart tools they have used on the internet is creating pop-up portals which are automated

computer AI systems which allow a customer to send enquiries to the pop up portal and the
customer with be helped by the automated system with the enquiry this is very reliable as it
quickly comes up with solutions and alternatives for customers to pick and make a decision on
which saves the customer a lot of time.
Research & development
-John Lewis and eBay use the internet to conclude research and development activites to
inovate and introduce new products and services which they feel will be suit customers and
meet their needs. This is often seen as the first stage within the development process and the
end goal is to take the new products and services and add it to the companies line of products
or services.
Procurement of supplies
-The procurment of supplies is a the method in which john lewis and ebay use the interent to
purchase goods and services that enable a both organizations to continue to orperate their
businesses as normal. This method of constantsly ensuring the procurment of supplies is being
purchased allows both business to increase their market size as more and more customers are
able to access their products via their online platforms which also boosts profits by including
sales and deals such as any purchase of £30 offers the customers to the benefit of free delivery
and avaliabitity of parcel tracking codes for there items.
E-commerce or online sales
-John lewis specializes in online sales aswell as in store sales, the business benefits more from
using the internet to run their online store as it increases their profit margins as their products
are showcased towards a larger audience of customers who are to access a anumber of
different products.eBay specailizes in e-commerce as they have an online platform on the
internet in which customers are able to access and place order through the webpage which
then is directly sent to a nearby ebay warehouse in which the product is sealed and dispacted
to the customers home.
Public Relations
-Public relations refers to the art of of crafting pursaive marketing strategies in order to reach
out to the public to gain customer opionions or action on specific topics for example both john
lewis and eBay would use the internent to share to get messages across to customers to see
how customer would react to specific things for example john lewis ran a Publick realations
christmas campaign called ‘ the man on the moon’ this campaign was the help the puclic raise
awareness about families who are in desprate need in this season time of giving by donating to
