UNIT 10 :CARING FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE

P1: OUTLINE WHY CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE MAY NEED TO BE
LOOKED AFTER AWAY FROM THEIR FAMILIES

In this task I will be explaining what a looked-after child means and reasons why they
have to be looked-after by the local authority or voluntarily accommodated ..

What is a look-after child ?
A looked-after child means children who are voluntarily accommodated by the local
authority or children who are accommodated by the local authority as a result of a
CARE ORDER which can only be done through a court ruling .
A care order is a court order that places a child under the care of a local authority
However, when a care order is made it places responsibility on the local authority to
after the child .
According to NSPCC, A child who has been in care of their local authority for more
than 24hours is also known as a looked after child, looked after children are mostly
referred to as children in care , a term which many children and young people
prefer.Looked after children are in general living in
● Foster care
● In a residential children’s home .
● Being adopted
● Living in residential settings like schools or secure units .

There are different reasons why a child as to be looked after but i will explaining 3
child related reasons & 3 family related reasons
FAMILY RELATED REASONS

1. BEREAVEMENT : Bereavement is a state of intense grief . If a child’s parent
has just died or their guardian and they have no other family to take care of
them , most especially because he/she is a child and needs an adult to care
for them and to assist them with their education and daily duties . As a result

, of this many of them have had great difficulty with their education and often
fall behind the majority of children in their class . So when a child’s parent has
just died the local authority will have to find a solution for the child , the child
might be adopted or taken to a foster care where they can get adequate care.
Because the child has just lost a close relative they might need extra support
so the child has to be look-after .
2. PARENTAL ILLNESS: For example, a child is being taken care of by a single
mother and she falls extremely ill with intense medical attention and no one to
look after the child. She would voluntarily have to give the child to be
looked-after because she doesn’t have the capability to take care of the child
at the moment. And the child will looked-after by a guardian or kept in foster
care or residential care till the mother recovers then she can probably have
her child back .Other health issues can be drug addiction, mental health issues
,whereby the child can’t be taken care of because they are being abused by
their parents maybe under the influence of drugs or alcohol..A child who is
being abused will need to be removed from parents care for their own safety
and well-being . This also includes mental health issues like depression or
addiction , in such cases it’s certain the parents won’t be physically, mentally ,
intellectually fit to take care of their child ,And the child will be taken away
from under his:her parents care.
3. NEGLECTING BEHAVIOUR ::There are quite a few family who do not find it
necessary to sacrifice a lot for their children or even have struggles with their
mental health and struggling to feed themselves and their kids daily .In a
situation where a family find it hard to take care of their kids ,this could affect
a child's life .For example, the child goes to school hungry and keep asking for
food from his/her other classmates.or doesn’t look good to friends gathering
or school .The child do not have nice clothes because his/her family can’t
afford them or do not care about them because they have other things doing
in their lives . .Schools or neighbours should be able to report to anyone who
would help understand that the child needs adequate care so the local
authority can accommodate the child. There are so many cases of neglect in
the UK whereby parents neglect their kids and they end up dying due to
neglect .
