P1.Explain the role of effective communication and interpersonal interaction in health and
social care context.
Effective communication in health and social care is essential when trying to establish and
maintain relationships as it is a process that involves listening, questioning, responding and
understanding, having this skill help to build trust,it will also encourage the individual to use
the service.
Effective communication allows carers to express trust ,understanding and support,so that
they can make the user feel comfortable as possible.
For example, effective communication allows carers to express empathy for the service
user, therefore trying to understand how the service user is feeling and how the carer will feel
in that position, this could change the communication to fit around the needs of the service
user, the service user will feel they are being treated as an individual, rather than as a
number.
One to one communication;when you start a conversation with someone you don’t know
so well, you should always try to create the right kind of feeling.it is important to create a
positive emotional atmosphere, the other person needs to feel relaxed and happy to talk to
you.
For example you can start a conversation with a service user by saying”How are you today
darling”the service user will see you as friendly and relaxed and would communicate
effectively with you, once you've created a friendly atmosphere, you can get down to
business, when it's time to finish the communication you should leave the person with the
right kind of emotions so you might say things like “have a lovely day,see you soon”,to show
them you value them.
Group communication;Only works well when people are willing to participate in the
conversation. Sometimes people feel threatened if they have to speak to a group of people
or might stay quiet because they are worried about other people's reaction.
it is important that the group has the right emotional atmosphere, people in groups often use
humour or friendly ways of behaving to create the right group feeling which encourages
people to talk, creating the right group atmosphere involves maintaining the group so it is
often called group maintenance.
Having a leader is very essential and useful because the leader can encourage people to
express their ideas and help them to take turns when talking, group leaders often encourage
people to focus on a particular task within the group.
When talking in a group conversation you will need to think through your points before
sharing them to the group, because of this extra preparation talking to a group can feel very
different from talking in a one to one situation.
Group communication fails when people speak at the time because that is noise and
communication will not go well, the skill of taking turns involves identifying the following
pattern, when a person is about to finish speaking they usually signal by lowering their voice
tone, slowing their pace of talking or looking at the next person in turn. Because if everyone
is talking,Nobody's listening.
