Bereavement
Scenario
Reach Care Home
Percy is the shift manager on duty in Reach residential care home, which is a care
home for young people with learning difficulties. She just received a call that Ava,
one of the residents of the care home grandmother passed away and they were
really close, it is going to be tough and heartbreaking to pass such information.
Ava is a resident that suffers from language processing disorder. It might be hard for
Percy to pass such information to her so she has to show her drawings and pictures
for her to be able to depict the information she is about to pass.

ACT ONE
SCENE ONE
(Percy is sitting in the office when she receives a call)

Percy : (sitting in the office writing her report) good afternoon. This is Percy from
Reach residential care home. How can I help you?
Bethany (mum): (indistinct chatter over the phone)
Percy: Yes I understand. I am very sorry for your loss, I will make sure to pass along
the news. Yes, yes, that's fine. Okay, thank you for letting me know I'll find the best
way to approach her with this devastating news.

ACT ONE
SCENE TWO
(Ava is sitting in her room occupied with her colouring book when Percy
approaches)

Percy: Hi Ava, you enjoying your colouring book?
Ava: umm… ( Due to her disorder it takes a while for words to form in her head) Yes,
look look.
Percy: wow well done… Ava, there's something your mother wanted me to tell you?

Ava: Is she coming to get
Percy: coming to get? I think you left a word out there Ava which word are you
missing.
Ava: Ummmm. Is she coming to get… Me?
Percy: Yes well-done ava and unfortunately no. Last night your grandmother went to
sleep peacefully in her bed but did not wake up. She's with the angels now.
Ava: I don't understand?
Percy: okay look here

( Percy then grabs a piece of paper and pen and begins to draw a picture of the
information she had been given in order to help Ava understand)

Ava: Grandma's dead? ( Eyes widened as tears began to flow)
Percy: Think of it as a long nap in which she is resting peacefully. She is flying with
the angels watching over you and your mum. So now you have to take good care of
your mum and be there for her okay. Listen to everything she tells you and become
the best daughter a girl can be.
Ava: (she begins to wipe her tears and a smile forms on her face) Okay.
THE END.
