P5 Describe how anti-discriminatory practices are promoted in health and
social care settings
It is important for individuals in the health and social sector to promote
anti-discriminatory practices and sanction any sort of discriminatory practices in the
health and social care setting.
The following are how discriminatory practices are promoted in health and social
care.
● Ethical principles
They are four key ethical principles that should be promoted in the health and social
care sector they include;
Justice; Residents or individuals in the health and social care setting should be
treated fairly no matter the background. For example in a care home, all residents
should be treated equally according to their needs and no one needs should be
neglected, No one’s needs should be kept higher than the others, everyone should
be treated equally.no matter the social status, residents should be treated equally.
Autonomy; All individuals in a health and social care setting choices and
preferences should be respected even if the person acts not interested in such
activity, all individuals should be given a choice and caregivers should not assume
their choices for example in a care home a patient with dementia in a care home is
deemed not being able to make the right choices or choices at all, the caregiver
always makes choices for her, she should be given choices to choose from and her
choices should not be assumed from the care worker.
Beneficence; This involves risks and costs, that a health and social care
professional should always practice and be concerned about what the patient. For
example, a doctor should always be concerned about patient health and should do
anything he can to ensure the wellbeing of the patient and to ensure that no harm
comes to the patient through any means, the doctor should also always hope for
better health and well-being of the patient.
Non-maleficence;
This is an ethical principle that states that any harm caused by a treatment or
intervention should not outweigh the benefits of that treatment. For example, any

treatment given to a patient in a health and social care setting should be beneficial
and if it will cause inconvenience or pain it should be more short term than and long
term, and the end benefits must outweigh the disadvantages.
Putting the individual at the heart of service provision.
To always put service users first in the service provision, the health and social care
sector needs to;
1. Empower individuals, for instance in a service users in a care home should be
encouraged to be confident in claiming their rights and expressing their
opinions.
2. Promote individuals rights, choices and well-being.e.g for example, caregivers
in a care home should always respect resident options and people rights.
3. Support individuals in expressing their needs and preferences.for example in
a health care context individuals should be encouraged to express their needs
and preferences in order to enable effective communication and to ensure
they are adequately taken off.
4. Provide active support consistent with the beliefs culture and preferences of
the individual. For example, in a care home, people’s religion should be
respected Muslims daily prayers and preferences choices and needs when it
comes to food.
Providing active support consistent with the beliefs, culture and preferences
of the individual
Active support means helping individuals as well as possible and taking their beliefs,
culture and preferences into account when making decisions in health and social
care settings, for example, if a resident with learning difficulty comes into a
residential care home, you need to ensure that they are listened to and that any
support they might need is met with, the support of an advocate might be needed.
Examples of mains forms of support that might be needed include Medical care
planning information, personal care etc.
