P3. Review the strengths and weaknesses of your own counselling skills
development.

In this task i will be reviewing the strengths and weaknesses of my counselling skills in my
role play as a counsellor which are counselling initiating ,maintaining and developing and
lastly a conclusion.I had to go through this processes while counselling my client so I will be
reviewing my strengths and weaknesses in each stage .

My first stage which is the initiating stage, one of my strengths in initiating my relationship
with my client was my listening skills. I paid attention to what my client had to say and
ensured that I wasn’t distracted by other things to ensure I showed my client the energy that
I am here to help her and she will feel free to tell me what is on her mind .while also picking
up key points of what my client is affected by in order to think of problem solving skills for
later. One of my strengths also included that I ensured that my body language was
appropriate and was upright and professional to counsel my client in order for my client to
feel comfortable and feel like I’m here to listen . My weakness in this stage will be since it
was my first time knowing my client I was unsure and nervous on what to do and the
impression she would even have on my counselling techniques . My role is based in a
school environment and it included a girl being referred to the counsellor by her teacher. My
client felt scared and anxious and thought she was in trouble ,my client might have felt a
breach of trust and confidentiality as the teacher did not talk to her directly about the notice
in her behaviour to her academics but rather told it to the counsellor.

Second stage which is maintaining and developing , I was able to paraphrasing tell my client
informations she said to me and repeating it to her to let her know I was indeed paying
attention to her and showing that I care and I also ensured that I expressed that I understand
my clients point of view and she means and how much what is happening to her means to
her, I was also in a way showing my client that she’s safe to tell anything to me and I will
understand her I am a free shoulder to Lean on . I ensured that my client was telling me all
this and I did not judge her in any sense but instead showed her non judgmental and
confidentiality skills to reassure her. I made sure to repeat information told to me by my client
in order to not have misinformation and to know the direct order of what follows in order to
understand ways to help my client in dealing with her situation. My weakness in this stage
will include repeating the information my client gave me , she must have felt some kind of
way that I was repeating it which most have made my client uncomfortable even though
short lived . Since my client is a student I felt like she felt like I would be judgmental of her
problems and difficulties. and I felt like the client must feel like I would also need to tell her
teachers what she discussed with me during counselling which I might have to do in order to
sort out ways to improve her skills . Conclusion to the last stage of reviewing my counselling
skills weaknesses and strengths .

In conclusion of my counselling skills my strengths will include that I was able to prove and
put my problem solving skills to use with my client , explaining to her ways she can cope with
her difficulties in school. And ways me as her counsellor can prove to help her to make sure
she’s on track with her academics . I also reassured my client that she was going through is
a normal process and I had to go through it also when I was her age , sister leaving for uni
and feeling lonely at home and not being avid to cope with maths . I showed my client my

genuineness and that I only want her to be better in anything with positive regards . I showed
my client empathy to make it known to her that I can understand her pain and what she is
feeling . My weakness would also include the fact that I did not have that much time left to
be able to complete my counselling session as she had to leave for class . Another was that
she was not extremely open to me about her difficulties as it is only our first session , as
sessions go bye hopefully it gets better. My client was not really confident in saying her
difficulties as she felt quite ashamed about them since the teacher referred to her .

M2 . Assess how the development of counselling skills affects self development .
In this task I will be assessing how the knowledge and skills I gained from counselling skills
made me develop as a person . The skills I have acquired and that made me self develop as
a counsellor includes :
Communication skills: My communication skills certainly improved as you need to have
excellent verbal communication skills to be able to communicate effectively with your client
as a counsellor .whilst also doing it in a professional way to not make my client feel
uncomfortable.
Interpersonal skills: i learned the importance of working with other professional groups in
my role play, my client was referred from her teacher , the teacher noticed she was not
doing well with her academics which shows an example in how professional should work
hand in hand , I will also need to follow up with the teacher to see how my client is doing if
she’s improving or not . Whilst still building a professional relationship with my client so she
can learn to trust me .
Problem solving skills :my problem solving skills also develop as I need to effectively think
of ways to help my client through any difficulties they are facing , making research or other
processes I deem is necessary as a counsellor .
Non-judgmental : I learnt how to be open minded and tolerant of people's way of life and
choices ,and making them feel like they I am judging their situation but rather making them
feel like I understand where they are coming from.
Ethical skills : I learnt the importance of professionalism which means making sure all my
clients tells me they are confidential , ensuring their health and safety and also understand
the type of effect I have on my clients so I must always stick to the laid down policies of my
work ethic .
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is a set of human requirements that are important for an
individual in order for them to achieve complete self development and self actualization, this
theory is by a psychologist named Abraham Maslow .
The theory includes
Psychological needs : these are basic requirements for human beings to survive which
includes air , food , shelter , clothing and water .
Safety needs :this includes that everyone needs protection, security ,law and Order in the
society.
Love and belongingness needs : this includes social needs that involve the humans
desire for interpersonal relationships and romantic relationships , examples which include
friendship, trust, acceptance, receiving and giving affection and love.
As a counsellor it is important to be aware of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs especially the
psychological needs
Esteem needs : which is classified into two categories .
● Feeling of independence and achievements , self esteem
● Wanting a good reputation and respect from people , status.
