P1 Describe the processes for initiating, maintaining, developing and concluding a
helping relationship

Counsellors are professionals who are impartial and non judgemental that provide safe and
confidential scenarios for individuals to look at their own values and beliefs . Counsellors do
not necessarily give advice but will support their clients to look into their own behavioural
patterns and allow them to make decisions they deem is appropriate for them .In order to
become a counsellor they are skills that are needed they include. This tasks include the
description of initiating , maintaining, developing and concluding a helping relationship.

Initiating a relationship:
In the process of initiating a relationship, a counsellor must understand that all clients will
have different ideas and beliefs and ethnicities ,a counsellor should be able to understand
that ,and learn to deal with their clients in a way that will benefit them . A counsellor should
understand that there will be boundaries within them and the clients which they should avoid
to overstep in anyway .Abiding by the boundaries will improve the relationship and also
promote trust in the counsellor to client relationship. It is very vital that a counsellor counsels
their clients in a very appropriate setting that will make them feel free, relaxed and in the
mood to talk about what they are feeling . A counsellor should also learn to communicate the
limitations of their helping relationships and advising them on how counselling will benefit
them. Counsellors should ensure that everyone gets equal treatment and that they also give
their clients access to the same facilities without being prejudiced ,doing this it is assured
that every client will feel comfortable and happy and it will most importantly initiate a good
relationship.

If possible a counsellor should provide their clients with helplines they can call incase of
emergencies and they need anyone to talk to,this way the client will be rest assured that the
counsellor will always be there to help them even when it's not during their sessions.
Counsellors should also make sure that they inform their clients that they are on a contract
and anytime they want to drop out they can ,the terms and conditions of their relationship
should also be explained by the counsellor to the client .and if at all they ever want to drop
out they can with confidence .Confidentiality is very paramount when initiating a relationship
as the client should be able to confide in the counsellor without the fear of their secrets being
exposed and it will also create a very strong bond of trust ,confidence and understanding
between the client and the counsellor .Counsellors must be able to develop an empathic
relationship with the client to be able to see issues from their clients point of view, this way
the counsellor will be able offer more of the help the client will need and understand them
better .Also Counsellors need to make it known to their clients if they need to be referred to a
healthcare professional ,the counsellor also needs to ensure that their client gets enough
attention from the health care professional and ensure they have access to quality health
services. If a counsellor abides by all the above techniques and skills the counsellor is bound
to initiate a healthy relationship from all clients.

MAINTAINING;
Even after initiating the relation it is important that the counsellor maintains the relationship
he has with the client , They are certain skills and techniques that need to be taken in order

to maintain the relationship, the counsellor has to ensure that they are in no way
judgemental to their clients,do not make them feel bad about their decisions or steps they
have taken at what point in their life, and as the client is being open about their problems to
the counsellor, the counsellor should ensure that by all means any discussion that took place
remains confidential as this will promote trust between the counsellor and the client
Counsellors should also make sure that everything discussed is jotted down in a booklet to
be able to keep up with the progress the person has taken so far since they starting
counselling the client . However, It is also very vital that counsellors have positive attitude
and motives towards their clients , this would encourage the client to see things in a positive
light and will relate it to their life or any issue they are pressed about , Counsellors should
also ensure that they refer their clients to other health care services , if they that there is a
need too as their job is to look after their clients needs and mostly well-being . The
counsellor should also ensure that all requirements meant for different clients are met up
too, to create a conducive environment. By doing this ,the relationship between the client
and the counsellor has been maintained .

Developing :
When developing a relationship it is important that a counsellor develops a strong
relationship with the client , so the client will trust them more and be open about things
affecting them in their lives without feeling uncomfortable, this would make the counsellor be
able to offer many options and talk to them .it is also very important that counsellors
empower their clients to enable to be able to make good life choices or apply it to any life
choices they are about to make , Counsellors should also ensure that every session is
tailored to their clients needs.as every client has different needs ,this will make it possible for
each client to be able to enjoy their sessions according to their needs.

Concluding a helping relationship
Even when the contract between a client and a counsellor is coming to an end it is important
that the counsellor reassures their client and tell them that if they ever need help their door is
always open .the counsellor should also offer any information to the client that they deem is
necessary for them or that will make their life easier, teach them and educate them on the
steps to take.. In a situation where the counselor sees no improvement in the client it is
important that they refer them to other health care professionals they see might be able to
help their situation . Counsellors should also talk to their clients about ways they can cope
without them ,teaching the clients things like this will empower the client which means they
can take care of themselves independently and this will make the individual self aware and
be able to do things themselves more than depending on others,if the client starts to do
things independently that means counselling is successful and concluding a helping
relationship also.

STRATEGIES USED BY COUNSELLORS
As a counsellor there are numbers of strategies that should be put into place when dealing
with a client in order to make the client feel comfortable in sharing their problems. A
counsellor should learn to bring up challenging scenarios to their clients and they should
both talk about possible solutions to it ,that way if the client is faced with a real life situation
related to that,it will help them apply their session talks with their counsellor to it .
