Why Henry was in a Strong Position:
Married Elizabeth of York and quickly had a son, Prince
Arthur in September 1486 – thus gaining support from many
Yorkists. They were satisfied an heir of Edward V would rule
Had the support of Lancastrians as Henry VI’s direct line of
succession had ended after his son Edward, Prince of Wales
died in 1471
Richard III’s only son (and thus direct descendant) had died
as a child in1484
Henry did not gain the throne with the help of the nobility – did not
owe anyone anything so would not face a revolt by previous
supporters
England had no overmighty nobles left that could pose a serious
threat to Henry’s reign. By 1485 they were dead and great lands
had been (mostly) inherited by Henry
Had no brothers and one uncle so could not be
overthrown
Defeat of Richard III was seen as God’s judgement on a
regicide – he had overthrown and killed Edward V (the
rightful King). Henry was a usurper but had killed a
‘tyrant’
Henry was an able politician and learnt his trade as a
refugee – worked hard to preserve his office
Why Henry was in a Weak Position:
Had little active support from the English nobility due to his exile in
Brittany in 1471
There were many Yorkist princes with better claims to the throne
e.g. Edward, Earl or Warwick and John de la Pole, Earl of Lincoln
(nephews of Edward IV)
Henry was a usurper with a weak claim
¾ previous English Kings had been violently overthrown in the Wars
of the Roses (Henry VI 1471, Edward V 1483 and Richard III 1485)
