P1 explain different types of business information, their sources and purposes
M1 analyse different types of `business information and their sources
Introduction
Business information is all information that can relate to the company’s business activities.
Without business information, a business cannot achieve its objectives since they don’t have
information that aids their objectives. They are several types of business information. These
include verbal, written, onscreen, multimedia and web-based information.

Verbal information
Verbal communication is a method of communication that entails spreading information
through speech. Usually with today’s technology, verbal communication can be used
through cellphones or online conferencing. Verbal communication is by far the best way to
communicate a message to an individual or a group. This is because verbal communication
lowers the chances of the message being misunderstood or misinterpreted because there is
an element of tone and emotion. For example, in Safaricom there is a customer service
department that deals with requests for assistance from customers that are using
Safaricom’s services like the Safaricom faiba internet service. When the customer service
representative asks the customer “what is the problem” through text or email, the customer
might see it as rude since they cannot tell the tone or the emotion on how the sentence was
said. With a phone call, the customer will understand the tone of the customer care
representative which will lead to the message being communicated more clearly. This is why
“emojis” are used often during text messaging because the tone is clearer.
The disadvantage of using verbal communication is that it is impractical for a company the
size of Safaricom. For example, it is much easier and faster to send an email to Safaricom
employees instead of gathering them together on starting an online meeting.

Written information
Written information is information that is written using numbers, letters and symbols.
Writen information is one of the most common types of communication because written
information consists of graphs, charts and writings that are on common media outlets like
magazines newspapers and emails. The benefit of written information unlike verbal
information is that written information can be stored for very long timeperiods. In
Safaricom, the most efficient way they promoted their faiba internet service is by designing
advertisements with written information. If they used verbal communication techniques,
the advertising campaign is bound to flop since it sounds too time connuming and invorms
less potential customers. For example, if Safaricom attempted to advertise their faiba
internet service through telemarketing, they are less likely to reach as many customers as
possible tue to the fact that some Kenyans don’t have cellphones and it will be too time
consuming to talk individualy to several Kenyans. Moreover, potential customers are bound
to hang up the call since it comes from a random number. Another way Safaricom uses
written communication is by communicating with both staff members and customers via
SMS or E-mail. This is because using email is an efficient way of reaching out to many
recipients at once. For example, Safaricom can automatically send emails to all their
subscribers of their faiba service to let them know if they paid their subscription for the
internet or not. This is much more efficient and cheeper compared to calling customers.
On-screen information.

, On-screen information is information that can be displayed on devices through a
combination of video, audio ,graphics, animation and text. On-screen information can be an
effective communication tool to give information to a large audience. This is because people
tend to internalize information through different formats for example, some people will
tend to understand or internalize information through visual media like animation and video
while others tend to internalize information through plain text. In Safaricom, they wanted to
launch an event in the sarit center expo to celebrate safaricoms 19 th year aniversery on
ocrober 30th 2019. In this event, they where going to reviel to a large gathering of customers
and customers watching through devices that they are launching new products and revieling
their new startergies. In this event, Safaricom used a software called Microsoft powerpoint.
This software allows users to display information through audio, video, text and graphics
through slides. This method of communication makes the information more interesting and
exiting for the customers since they are bound to pay more attention to videos and
animations instead of a long word document. They displayed all of this information on a
projector that was provided by the sarit center expo team.

Multimedia information
Multimedia information is information that is communicated though various media
elements. It can be a combination of video, audio, text, graphics and animation. Multimedia
information is one of the most common methods of spreading information especially in
advertisements. Safaricom has used multimedia for their advertisement in many ways,
however the advertisement that stood out in my opinion was the animated “juma”
advertisement in 2013. Safaricom launched this advertisement with multimedia that
conststed of graphics, audio and animation. The advertisement was engaging mainly due to
the fact that people get more engaged when there are visuals instead pf plain text. It also
helped that the animation was entertaining and had a funny script while still clearly
communicating with the customers to stream YouTube videos with Safaricom data bundles.
The advertisement also became popular because of the phrase that was used which was
“Mazgwembe mazgwembe zgwembe zgwembe zgwembe” this phrase became popular in
2013 which further encouraged people to watch the advertisement.

Web-based information
This is information that can be accessed using the internet. Usually web-based information
uses multimedia do display information. For example, Safaricom uses web based
information my making their own Safaricom website. In this website Safaricom uses a
combination of video, text, animation and audio media methods to advertise their services
they provide like m-pesa, mobile service, home faiba and mobile data. They also use this
website to advertise vacancy’s for job job positions.
Using web based information is effective because everyone around the world can access this
website which increases coverage and the website also can provide all the information a
potential customer needs in order to use and maintain their products or services that they
purchased form Safaricom.
The disadvantage of this is that website domains can be expensive depending on the user
that is providing the website domain.
