Assignment C - Part 1
An Evaluation of Cutting Edge Advanced

 Use the checklist from unit 10 ('Evaluating course book material') to write a general evaluation
of the book.
 You won't be able to comment on all items as you only have one unit and the contents, but say
as much as you can.
 This must be presented as a coherent essay, not just a list.
 Then say whether you personally would like to use the book with an advanced class and why or
why not - this is just your opinion, so there is not a right or a wrong response to this part.
 You do not need to refer to the class described for Part 2 of this assignment.
 Write 300 - 500 words.

Word count: 333

The Cutting Edge coursebook is an all-round good resource for the students who are advanced in
their English skills (C1/C2 level). The theme, globalisation, and urbanisation, also seems fit to the
proficiency level and experience of the target class. The first impressions of the booklet showed
that it is well structured and presented neatly, the unit conveys all four skills the students need
(reading, writing, listening and speaking) across the different topics that come up. The transition of
simple tasks into more difficult tasks seems natural and smooth, for example it starts off with
general discussions about their experiences in relation to globalisation and give examples of
advantages and disadvantages to more efficient type debates between groups and voicing their
opinions in relation to the context. The use of grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation if shown in
many exercises, gives good facts to read about and makes the entire course interesting to read and
relevant to learn about for the students. In the grammar section, it looks at continuous verb forms
which is relevant to the context as the whole reason about globalisation is that the transformation
of it is ever changing which links well to the verb tenses.

However, the coursebook doesn’t have an urbanisation vocabulary list, which that I believe the
students would benefit from. And on the first page, it gives a list of what the course book contains,
but not in the correct order of the pages which might be confusing to the student or the teacher. I
would change this and add a little bit more information to ease the student into the unit so they
are not overwhelmed. Overall, I would use this coursebook in my class, and I would add some
more material on top such as worksheets linking to the topic for students can do at home and
revise on. And create some independent tests for the students to use in class to check on their
learning and where they might be struggling with the coursebook.
