Unit 11 Assignment A:

Apprentice Name: Nicole Senyurt
Apprentice Role: Trainee Maintenance Technician - Maintains a wide range of pieces of
machinery
Company: CNC Ltd.
Introduction:
CNC Ltd. Is an engineering organisation that manufactures a range of household appliances
including microwaves, freezers and washing machines . As a young individual,I am a trainee
maintenance technician whose role is to maintain a wide range of pieces of machinery . At CNC
Ltd, I focus on maintaining these two type of machinery- manual and CNC machinery which are
used for the manufacturing of these appliances. Due to my enthusiasm for working on the
maintenance activities, my supervisor has requested me to investigate a range of different types
of maintenance, maintenance cost considerations and the reasons behind carrying out
maintenance. This is to ensure that I gain further understanding about my role as a trainee
maintenance technician. Therefore this report will include these three objectives below to
ensure that I understand the purpose of maintenance.
Types of Maintenance & Common Maintenance Techniques:
Preventative Maintenance:
What is Preventative Maintenance?
Preventative Maintenance is a type of maintenance which consists of regularly performing on
pieces of equipment in order to lower the probability of failure. This is performed whilst the
equipment is still functioning in order to make sure that the equipment does not suddenly break
down out of nowhere.
How is it used?
When using preventative maintenance, we take on board 5 key steps to assist us with
maintenance:
 Visual Inspection- This is a fundamental part of this maintenance and helps our
engineering company out in two ways. Firstly, as a trainee maintenance
technician, I use both manual and CNC machinery hence it is important to have
facility inspections which ensures that the equipment is safe to use as it is
important for us employees to be safe when manufacturing the household
appliances. With this in mind, this helps to ensure that as an engineering
organisation we minimise the injuries occurring throughout the manufacturing
process and also provide the organization with liability protection. The second
way how visual inspection helps us is by protecting property. This is due to how
visual inspection focuses on checking the safety of the milling machine and
checking for any potential defects within the milling machine in our case that can
be seen with the naked eye, hence it is important to check for these defects as
soon as possible as we want to ensure that the welfare of all the employees is

, positive. And how with these constant inspections that run help to ensure as well
that the equipment we use like the milling machine and the CNC machine are
functioning so that there is no delay in the manufacturing of our microwaves .
 Cleaning- As a trainee engineer, it is important to make sure that the environment
I am in is clean and up to the health and safety standards. Hence when doing
regular cleaning of the building and the grounds, this is to ensure that in case if
there were any chemical spills or sharp metal pieces due to when manufacturing
our microwaves which involves chemicals and when using the milling machines,
there is high possibility of fine dust being formed therefore it is important to
remove this as soon as possible as it is a respiratory hazard and we want to
minimise the risk of any inhalation caused by these machines. Also when cleaning
assets as well it is important to make sure that there is no chemical spillage to
minimise the risk of skin irritation or possible skin allergies to be formed. Hence it
is important to have regular cleaning done to ensure the welfare of the employees
and the environment is safe to work in.
 Lubrication- It is important to lubricate the moving equipment of our milling
machine and CNC machinery because when we use these to manufacture our
microwaves for example, these machines need to be up to the standards. Hence
when we lubricate the moving parts it helps to reduce wear and tear which helps
to improve the effectiveness of the machinery. This overall helps to minimise any
delay in the manufacturing of our microwaves in this case.
 Making routine adjustments- As an engineering company, it is important to make
routine adjustments because there can be something lacking in our routine which
is stopping us from reaching optimal performance when manufacturing our
microwaves. Hence it is important that by checking thoroughly, we can make
changes that can have a major impact on our performance as a company and
possibly help us to reach that optimal performance and also be energy efficient.
 Alignment Check- It is important to have regular alignment checks as there can be
potential defects in our equipment parts in our milling machine below:

(Milling machine)
In our case, the spindle which is the shaft and is used to hold and helps move the milling
machine’s cutting tools. The draw bolt and jamnut is used to secure the holder and arbor

,in the spindle, however the draw bolt was loosened, which is bad because if one of us
employees use the milling machine, the spindle would malfunction and could cause
potential eye damage to the employee. Hence it is important to repair these parts and
improve the machine parts.
Why is it used?
As we can see from how Preventative Maintenance is used for the machinery , I will
examine the benefits of this type of maintenance:
 Saving Money- By having regular equipment maintenance this helps to reduce the
costly repairs. Also breakdowns have a major impact on the business and could
shut down completely whilst the necessary repairs are taken place hence it is
important to have this maintenance as it helps to lower the chance of our
business closing down and to not lose our revenue due to the impact of the shut
downs.
 Longer life for Equipment - By having regular inspections on the milling machines
and CNC machinery, this helps the machine to likely last longer and detect any
potential issues at an early stage so that they can be dealt with earlier on rather
than before it is too late.
 Minimal Energy Wastage- As overworked and equipment that is not maintained
properly can lead to a struggle of remaining efficient and would waste a lot of
energy that is unnecessary. Hence by having this maintenance,it helps to make
sure that the equipment are well kept under control and properly serviced thus
leading to less energy wastage which is a goal every company should strive for.
 Safer working Environment- By having regular preventative maintenance, there is
an increased reduction of dangerous and fatal equipment failures therefore this
makes our workplace a safe and healthy environment for the employer and
employees to be in.
Why would someone not choose this?
On the other hand,we cannot forget that Preventative Maintenance also has
disadvantages too:
 Expensive Upfront Cost- Although preventative maintenance helps us as an
engineering organisation to save up money in the long term, the initial costs for
the set-up plan could be potentially high. Therefore it is crucial that you have
enough money in the beginning to pay for the initial costs.
 Planning- Before beginning to create and follow a suitable maintenance schedule,
it is fundamental to make sure you form detailed and intricated planning to assure
that when before beginning this process, the facility assets are covered.
Corrective Maintenance:
What is Corrective Maintenance?
Corrective Maintenance is a type of maintenance, which involves correcting an issue
with an advantage and this enables it to have a reordered proper working structure. This
maintenance works with both planned and unplanned tasks.

, Corrective Maintenance is used in 3 situations:
 When there’s a detected issue through Condition Monitoring
 When doing a regular inspection and it detects a potential issue
 When pieces of equipment start to break down
How is it used?
Within Corrective Maintenance, there are three steps to how this procedure works
which’ll be explained below:
 Detect a fault- As an engineering company, it is important to make sure we
regularly detect the faults in our machinery including a recent experience with our
CNC machines:

(Diagram
of CNC Lathe)
The Safety Window was broken, hence it was important that we detected this fault of the
safety window because when we use the CNC machines , chippings are formed and it
could swirl around within the machine. Also tensioned workpieces could potentially be
loosned due to the use of incorrect operation and flies right through the workspace at a
great force which is unsafe. Therefore a safety window is important to have as it protects
the employees who are operating it from these issues regarding chipping and tensioned
workpieces.

 Report the fault- Once we reported the issue to our employer about the crack in
the safety window, our employer decided to contact the CNC Lathe suppliers. This
was effective because the CNC Lathe suppliers were able to replace the old safety
window and ensures that when we report an issue regarding one of our machines
at the company,we can immediately contact the suppliers and ask them to fix the
issue if they can fix it.
 Rectify the fault- When the CNC Lathe suppliers came, they replaced the safety
windows that was originally made from polycarbonate and replaced it with a mix
