How did political clubs influence the revolution?

Girondins

 Parliamentary group who supported pro-war policy in Legislative Assembly and in Jacobin
club; not too radical but not as cohesive
 Lack of parliamentary discipline + small- (mainly friends of Brissot) so often lumped together
with other groups
 Led by Brissot + Roland
 Pro-war
 Critiquing emergency powers + centralist policies
 Their critique didn’t actually impede the powers ie Montagnards
 Lost popular support after attacking the power of the Commune
 Their all or nothing thing- supporting war- meant that only influential surrounding this topic
and put all their eggs in one basket
 Many executed in summer + autumn of 1793
 Expelled from the Jacobin club + then purged from Convention

Cordeliers

 Left-wing + very accessible, minimal entry fees + open to anyone so big membership
 Support assembly but wanted to make sure they were treating everyone equally e.g smaller
groups of society
 Quite successful as inclusive but influence waned after 1792 as became too radical for
people to support

Feuillants

 Broke off from Jacobins- more moderate than these but for a constitutional monarchy
 Aim of constitutional monarchy
 Had big influence on assembly initially, over time their moderate views became more
unacceptable as monarchy became less and less liked esp. after Terror

Paris Jacobin Club:

 Left wing, radical club but not as radical as cordeliers; initially only deputies could join, then
bourgeoisie + later on so could active citizens, by 1790 expanded to over 1000 members
 Wanted to make sure constitution goes ahead, representing bourgeoisie who benefit largely
from the constitution so don’t want aristocracy to regain any powers
 Successful at beginning, gained influence but as became more radical they split towards end
of revolution

Provincial Jacobin Clubs

 Outside Paris so can represent views of not just Parisians
 Republican- don’t want King, wanted educated pressure on NA to remove King
 Radical so found membership split

Key similarities + differences between clubs:

 Often waned in popularity as they became more radical
