Research Design
Ethics
 Slide 2: Overview
 1. Ethics and research design.
 2. Stances on ethics.
 3. Ethical principles (participants and audience).
 4. Three examples.
 5. Publication ethics.
 6. Ethics approval and procedures at the University of Glasgow.
 Slide 3: Ethics and R/S Design
 Research design “deals with a logical problem and not a logistical problem.” (Yin
1989, cited in De Vaus 2001).
 Ethics touches upon both.
 Ethics is also covered in workshops of the Researcher Development Programme
(RDP). This is open to PG students.
rdp/rdpcourses
 Slide 4: Stance on Ethics (Bryman, 2008)
 Universalism.
 Ethical transgression is pervasive.
 Anything goes.
 Deontological ethics.
 Consequentialist ethics.
 Slide 5: Universalism and Situation Ethics
 Universalism:
 Ethical principles should never be broken.
 Situation ethics or principled relativism:
 Unless there is some breaking of ethical rules, we would never know about certain
social phenomena.
 Therefore, decide on a case-by-case basis.
 Slide 6: Ethical transgression is pervasive
 All research involves some breach of ethical principles.
 Example: Asking a survey question about income and another one on education but
not telling the participants that the goal is to look at whether the participants’
education has a causal effect on income and how this will be framed in the final
article.
 Therefore, ethical violations are relative and decision making needs to be flexible.
 Slide 7: Anything Goes
 The kinds of deception in which social researchers engage are trivial compared to
those perpetrated by powerful institutions in modern society (mass media, the
police, and industry).
 Therefore, social researchers are entitled to study anyone in any setting.
