Assignment C - Part 1
An Evaluation of Cutting Edge Advanced
Use the checklist from unit 10 ('Evaluating course book material') to write a general evaluation
of the book.
You won't be able to comment on all items as you only have one unit and the contents, but say
as much as you can.
This must be presented as a coherent essay, not just a list.
Then say whether you personally would like to use the book with an advanced class and why or
why not - this is just your opinion, so there is not a right or a wrong response to this part.
You do not need to refer to the class described for Part 2 of this assignment.
Write 300 - 500 words.
The Cutting Edge Advanced book seems very useful to teach an advanced class and meets most of
the criteria mentioned in Unit 10. The book starts off with the topic and various images that are
related. The layout of the books arranged in a way which is not cluttered and will not create
confusion. There is both course work and activities that is appropriately designed for the advanced
level classes. All four skills I.e listening, reading, speaking and writing and incorporated in the
course book along with the activities. The activities begin on an easy level and moves its way to
hard. The activities also provide learners to work independently, in pairs and group. The book
comes with a teachers guide, a digital mini dictionary of key vocabulary and a DVD featuring audio
and video clips required for the lesson. The teacher’s guide will be useful in saving time for
preparations and lesson plans. It will be a helpful guide for lesson plans with aims, objectives and
previous knowledge learners require.
I checked the book on pearson.com and to my knowledge, no test papers are mentioned. I would
use this book for my advanced class but I would adapt certain lessons and maybe add more notes
of my own for learners, depending the class I am teaching. The topics in the coursebook do not
seem offensive and will be suitable for the advanced class. The cost of the book is also reasonable
considering that it comes with a variety of helpful resources. Learners are also able to work online
and in their books. The tasks are appropriately designed and contains lot grammar and vocabulary
activities. Students can use the learner’s book as a guide to see what type of work they are doing
and the types of topics that are mentioned.
