Unit 16 - Rework
M2 – Compare the use of motivation theories in an organisation.
D1 - Suggest, with justification, ways of improving motivation in an organisational setting.
In this task I will be comparing the use of motivation theories in the chosen case study, The
Natural Beauty Company. I will also be suggesting and justifying the ways of improving
motivation in an organisational setting.
In the factory department of the company, there is a great lack of motivated workers and bad
employee treatment. This is evident through their 80% staff turnover per year, this is due to their
neglect of any formal training at the start of their job, with all new employees needing to learn for
themselves. From not giving staff adequate training, this reduces productivity within the
workforce and would evidently reflect on the quality of their work performance. I do not believe
any effective theories have been put into place for the workforce, therefore I would suggest
Taylors motivational theory may possibly motivate employees in the factory, this theory
highlights that the main thing employees are motivated by is money. This is due to only a £25
pay increase over three years which has not satisfied employees, therefore pay/pay rise
incentives may be the greatest issue that employees are neglected of which needs to change.
As a result, if their wages are increased this would help employees to be more productive in the
workplace as they know they are being highly rewarded for their work. On the other hand, for
long term developments, this may be difficult to continuously drive staff productively through
repetitive pay rises, therefore it would be important for the company to negotiate different
incentives that involve a profit for the employees, whereby the company would not be highly
affected in costs. For example, offering staff discounts to its employees. Furthermore, I believe
the rewards or incentives that the company could use may similarly be bonuses, therefore the
more work employees are completing in the factory, the higher chance of a reward or bonus for
employees, this could be used in the factory department by reflecting on the number of products
that are manufactured by an employee and if they continuously exceed the daily target and
evidently reflect on their workload through heightened productivity.
The filling and packing lines are a highly satisfied department in the company, these
employees are motivated through numerous factors, therefore this would complement Mayo’s
motivational theory through good relationships with employees and their manager. Mayo’s
theory ultimately states that employees are not only motivated through money, but also
motivated through improved and considered social needs. This is beneficial as this allows
employees to speak freely and easily discuss any issues they may have; this is important in
resolving company issues and implementing change where employees trust their managers
without feeling afraid or ashamed to do so. Also, their good pay and relaxed environment
evidently causes a lower rate of staff turnover and absences with “some employees working at
the company for over 20 years”. However, it is important for the company to regularly monitor
their staff to ensure that all employees are happy and can freely speak if there are any address
issues, this may include development plans to check on staff and find their own individual
targets to prosper within the company. Some drawbacks of employees being monitored include
