Unit 1: P4
Key developments (from the 1960s onwards) that have shaped the present day
travel and tourism sector.
Since 1960s, Travel and Tourism industry has changed which include.
Legislation:
Legislation is a law in Travel and Tourism industry produced by the government which are
meant to be followed by customers. An Act to provide for the establishment of a British
Tourist Authority and Tourist Boards for England, Scotland and Wales with responsibility
for promoting the development of tourism to and within Great Britain
An Example of legislation development is Air Passenger Duty.
Air Passenger Duty (APD) is a compulsory tax by the government for all passengers
flying out the UK. It was introduced in 1994 with a £5 rate for the UK/EU and £10
elsewhere. Since then, it has shaped the Travel and Tourism industry. Due to increasing of
tax it has a negative impact on passengers as they cannot afford to pay for the holiday
which means customers would be unhappy about the service.
Product Development
The creation of products with entirely new or different features that offer to the customer
to satisfy their needs and expectations. Examples are Holiday Camps and Package
Holidays. Holiday Camp is a place where people on holiday can stay and different types of
entertainment are provided for them such as Butlins, Pontins, Warners etc. Package
holiday is a tour arranged by a travel agent by putting together accommodation,
transportation, etc For example Centre Parcs is a European network of holiday villages
incorporating a UK-based company, Center Parcs UK, which runs holiday villages in the
United Kingdom. They offer sshort-break holidays, with mid-week or weekend breaks all
year round, and longer stays if desired.
In 2009 Center Parcs Europe divided its parks into two brands: "Center Parcs", which
includes the 5 star parks, and "Sun parks", which includes the 3 or 4 star parks. In 2011 the
company decided to rename most Sunparks as Center Parcs. It has shaped the industry as
holiday camps or package holiday provider have made easier, more convenient for their
holiday and people are travelling more than they used to.
Destination Development
Destination Development is a process of providing or improving
public infrastructure services and facilities, products as well as
tourist information services to attract the customers in a
destination such as Benidorm. Benidorm is a coastal town
and municipality located in the comarca of Marina Baixa, Spain.
Benidorm is a blooming, busy tourist destination as it is the third
busiest destination in Europe. Benidorm holidays are known for
providing incredible beaches, thriving nightlife and towering
hotels, but it wasn't always this way. It has positive impacts on
industry as the more visitors’ visit the destination each year which
means the more revenue coming in as well as the tourist industry such as hotels,
restaurants are able to learn and improve the services they have provided.
