Introduction
The 3 key trends and 3 key factors that are currently affecting the travel and tourism
sector are:

Increased frequency of holidays:
Increased frequency of holidays helps in the Travel and Tourism industry to grow as the
more people take a vacation, trips, shorts breaks etc which means more money coming
into the industry. Overseas visits to the UK increased by 3 per cent in 2011 compared with
2010, according to provisional figures published by the Office for National Statistics
(ONS).The data, from the International Passenger Survey, shows the total number of visits
during 2011 reached over 30 million, with a record number of holiday visits. Business
travel also grew, for the second year running.

Natural Disaster
One of the factors which is currently affecting the travel and tourism industry is natural
disaster, it happens due to natural hazard such as volcanic eruptions, floods and tsunamis.
The reason this will affect on travel and tourism industry is that it will damage the roads
and airports which makes difficult for tourist to travel. A recent example is strongest
typhoons slammed Philippines on November 7, 2013. At least 1,000 people are dead in the
Philippines after Typhoon Haiyan hit the region.

Flexibility in booking methods and products
People used to book their holidays through travel agent but nowadays internet has made
easier for people as they can carry out research at home and book it online as well as they
would be able to save their time rather than seeing a travel agent which would take hours.
Websites like Expedia, First choice and Holiday Hypermarket have increase their profit
from internet as they have provided for visitors that they could make up holiday packages,
flight and accommodation as they desired. This affect on travel and tourism sector as
people book holidays independently which means travel agents have to close down their
company.

Cost of Travel
Today, people can travel all over the world as lot of low cost airlines are introduced.
However, air passenger duty (APD) also has changed which is keep increasing which
means people cannot afford to pay for it and won’t travel which is the negative impact on
the industry. By travelling with rails in the UK is expensive, but if you book in advance that
would be cheaper.

Holiday Home Ownership
Holiday home is a home that vacationers can rent and run as if it were their own home for
the duration of their stay. This gives them the freedom to eat in, eat out, stay in bed all day
and generally come and go as they please. There are about 235,000 second homes owned
abroad by British people.
Warnings and epidemics
A swine flu outbreak in and around Mexico City in 2009, governments around the world
has warned their citizens against travel to affected countries in the hope of limiting the
spread of the illness. It affected the travel and tourism industry as people cancelled their
holidays and people were discouraged to travel to Mexico City.
