Introduction
My name is ….., I am an MSN Student at Chamberlain University and a Registered Nurse with Fayette County Public Schools. I currently teach Pre-nursing through SouthSide Technical Center in the High Schools of the Fayette District. Concern/Solution
I am writing this today about my health care policy concern, the prevention of teen pregnancy in our high schools. My proposed solution to this growing issue is to implement comprehensive school-based clinics that offer direct and immediate student access to reproductive health education and contraception. In the uploaded video, you will find my presentation to my elected official, Mr. James McMillian, Chief of High schools for Fayette County. I made known the vital role that these clinics and our school nurses would play in educating our student population on safe reproductive health practices, preventative contraceptive medications and emergency medications that could be available in our school clinics to prevent unwanted teen pregnancies for our students. I discussed how school nurses are considered like family to our student population, and that many life-long bonds are made between students and nurses in the school system. Many of the students feel more comfortable and at ease speaking openly with their school nurses than they do their own parents, this fact alone is evidence enough that students would be more willing to seek out preventative reproductive education for their own health concerns, if these clinics were made available in all high schools. In communicating with my elected official in the attached video, I followed guidelines from our text, “Policy and Politics in Nursing and Healthcare” (Mason, Gardner, Outlaw & O’Grady, 2016), in which it states that the most effective strategy in lobbying is a in person, face to face meeting. Due to our global pandemic situation and that our school districts are shut down by order of government closure, I still met face to face, but by way of video conferencing. I hope that the video and documents this week, are proof of my research and extensive preparation that was vital to my presentation. The more familiar I became with the policy making process for my health care concern, the more confident and at ease I found myself. I felt ready for any posing questions or health care concern related issues that my elected official might ask me about during
our conference. To prepare myself to actively listen and respond appropriately I needed to not only know about policy, law, and my health care concern, but I had to practice what I wanted to say. My practice helped me become more familiar with my presentation from start to finish and aided somewhat in my confidence level in presenting my concern, solutions and answering any of my elected officials’ questions. At the conclusion of my meeting I would normally provide my contact information, but my elected official knows me and my contact information as he was my previous executive principal. However, in a few days, following this meeting as a professional courtesy I will follow up with my elected official and thank them for their time and consideration of my proposal on teen pregnancy prevention in our high schools. One major consideration was the length of my presentation regarding the amount of time my elected official has given me for our video conference, and I went over my allotted time of 5 minutes in my presentation. I felt I was precise and to the point, with minimal rambling. One communication tool that assisted me with this was using the “economy of words” and during this
process I wrote out a draft and tried to plan my time to present my introduction, the health care concern, my solution and leave adequate time to answer any questions that may be brought up during the video conference.
