Circulatory systems
Different systems

Open circulatory system
 In molluscs and arthropods including insects
 Blood is pumped from heart into blood vessels and into the body
cavity (haemocoel)
 The blood leaves the blood vessels and bathes the internal organs
allowing exchange of nutrients, waste and gasses
 Movement of the body muscles makes the blood move
 In open blood flows slowly due to large blood filled hemocoel
 Blood pressure is low, so it limits this system to smaller animals

Closed circulatory system
 In earthworms and vertebrate animals
 From heart to blood vessels which reach all body tissues
 Larger vessels branch into capillaries which occur between cells for
exchange of gases, nutrients and waste
 Blood flows back to the heart in blood vessels with valves to ensure
blood only flows in one direction towards heart
 After blood has circulated through the body it is pumped to lungs
under high pressure to absorb oxygen
 Hight rate of oxygen rich blood flow through the body makes it
possible for birds and mammals to maintain high level of activity

Human circulatory system

 Three main components: Heart = pumping organ
Blood vessels = tubes where
blood flows
Blood = fluid which is transport
medium
 Humans have closed blood systems where blood is limited to blood
vessels (high rate of oxygen rich blood flow: high level of activity)
 Humans have a double circulatory system with two main systems

Double circulatory system

, Pulmonary circulatory system

 Blood flows from heart to lungs and back
