Task 1

Politics – International politics has a big impact on war. Countries often fight over land and
territory as seen with the conflict between India and Pakistan over Kashmir. As well as this
people might want a different political system/independence as seen with the Scottish
referendum in 2014 on whether it should be independent. Majority voted no.

Nationalism – Is when a country believes it is better than another as seen with the conflict in
Northern Ireland in 1968. This was because Northern Ireland were deciding whether they are
independent enough to leave the UK and join the Republic of Ireland. In the end Northern
Ireland stayed a part of the UK.

Religion- This was also a big part of the Northern Ireland civil war in 1968. Religion can be a great
way of providing people stability and gives guidelines on how people should live their lives.
However, many people think their religion is superior compared to others leading to war and
hatred between religions, especially if a leader heavily relies on religion as part of the culture of
a country as seen with Poland that heavily promotes Catholicism.

Ideology - These strong political ideas on how things should be done in the world. This could be
seen with Nazism where they thought it was good to murder and enslave Jews. As a
result, WW2 happened as a response to ideology.

Land and Resources - Different countries have more land and resources than others. This means
that other countries will want those resources. This can be seen with the Iraq war where the US
believed Iraq had weapons of mass destruction as well as a lot of oil. As a result, the US
managed to take a lot of oil from Iraq to benefit themselves.

Historical Rivalry - Is when conflict happens between nations because of previous wars, as a
result they keep happening again because of previous problems and mistrust. This can be seen
with the battle of Hastings between the UK and France in 1066 which caused a spark into many
more wars over 800 years.

Ethnic Conflict - This can cause war if an ethnic group is denied resources or
any government mechanisms because the government decides they do not deserve them. This
can be seen with the Nazi regime where Jews were denied a lot of services and support as they
were inferior to others.
