OIL RESERVOIR
WHAT IS OIL?

Organic wastes are composed of elements
Hydrogen, Carbon, Nitrogen, and Oxygen.
Generally, these are being broken down and digested
by decomposers. However some organic wastes are
deposited on beds of different bodies of water and
combines with sediments. These accumulate layers
for millions of years and continuously subside. The
deeper it subsides, the more pressure and heat
increases eliminating the nitrogen and oxygen thus
leaving the elements hydrogen and carbon. These

Hydrocarbons are mixtures of organic compounds existing at different phases, in
accordance to the pressure and temperature of its location (Barona, 2015). These integrate in
various ways to form compounds such as the asphalt, liquid petroleum, and gas. Oil also known
as petroleum is one of the non- renewable resources that is primarily composed of hydrocarbon
molecules. It is confined on underground traps called reservoir. (Petroleum Refinery, n.d.).
Reservoirs are made up of rocks that are accessible and contain significant amount of oil and
gas. In order to be a reservoir rock, it must be both porous and permeable. (Energy Education,
n.d.).

OIL AS A SOURCE OF ENERGY

Oil is primary used as source of energy given the fact that it
very versatile and powerful. Today’s oil deposits were formed
millions of years ago from remains of dead organism buried
underground and subjected to intense heat and pressure. These then
form fossil fuels and are converted to oil. It takes a lot o time in
extracting large quantities of oil since majority of petroleum source
rocks are sedimentary rocks that are fine- grained.

Geologist locate oil reserves through different exploration
activities such as seismic waves, survey and rock core sampling. It
is usually extracted underground by drilling a well so that the crude
oil and other liquids travel up the bore hole closer to the surface
where it is needed. However, not all explorations results in
discovery of oil and gas. It usually takes about 50 to 100 exploration
and drilling wells to discover an oil reservoir. The Rocky Mountains
