AC1.4;
- Music genres ie; grime is said to encourage violence and criminal offences. Crime has been a
popular subject for music for years, gangsters, drug dealers and bank robberies and more
criminals are usually mentioned in the music lyrics. The public's perception of Drill rap videos
is strong and usually features threatening lyrics which are posted on youtube, which are
often named at rival groups/gangs, and contribute to the increased violence in certain parts
of the world (EG; New York, London and Los angeles). A well known British grime group
known as 1011 was banned from mentioning injury or death in their music and are required
to notify the police when releasing a new music video due to complaints about what they
are introducing/talking about. Some of the things they are talking about incite violence and
make committing offences look cool or glamorised.
- Electronic gaming usually involves crime, “Shoot-em-up” games such as; GTA and manhunt
include players engaging in stimulating violence and homicide. The WHO (World health
organisation) has classified “gaming disorder” as a medical condition. Due to the loss of
controlled gaming habits which leads to taking over the gamers daily life, significantly
affecting relationships, educational or occupational functioning. These Games online
represent crime as something cool to do which could have an impact on young people or
people who are easily influenced.
- Film, about 1/5th of all crimes are crime movies and up to half have significant crime
content. This is a common representation of crime in the film industry. Representation of
violence has become more explicit and extreme over time. An example of how films create
more violence is the James Bulger Case in 1993, when 2 little boys murdered a 2 year old
after a scene from the movie Chucky influenced them to commit a crime. Also, in films not
the correct crimes are always represented for example property crimes are
underrepresented in these films in comparison to the official statistics. This shows that the
media amplifies certain crimes over others, which may not show the true/correct picture to
the public.
- Social media sites and blogs can be a form of a person to commit a criminal offence such as:
Harassment or Bullying, Rascist comments, homophobic abuse, Islamaphobia etc. Social
media sites glamourize criminal offences for example; there are cases of gang assaults being
staged, recorded and posted online, the media outlets represent crime in a positive light
when that is really not the case.
