Liver Function Disorders: Neonatal Jaundice- Unconjugated, Plasma bilirubin levels rarely exceed 100mmol/L.
Pre-hepatic Jaundice- increased bilirubin in liver leading to high levels in plasma. The amount
that arrives in liver exceeds conjugating ability. Increase in unconjugated bilirubin.
Inherited hyperbilirubinemia- in childhood, metabolism disturbances, liver function tests are
all normal.
Crigler-Najjar syndrome- Type 1 is complete absence and type 2 is significant reduction.
Autosomal recessive inheritance. Unconjugated bilirubin increase in plasma. Deposits in
basal ganglia. Causes brain damage and kernicterus.
Gilberts syndrome- Inherited. Diagnosed on exclusion of hemolysis.
Rotors Syndrome- Autosomal recessive. Fluctuating jaundice. No pigment deposition.
Primary biliary cirrhosis/cholangitis (PBC)- autoimmune disease with presence of anti-
nuclear / smooth muscle cell antibodies. IgM levels are high
Liver function test profile: Proteins: Albumin and total protein measurement. Bilirubin:
Concentration total. Enzymes: for evaluation of cell damage and irritation.
