Summary of opening of the book:
Im Sommer 1990 erfuhr Kaminer von seinem Onkel, dass Juden
aus der Sowjetunion in die DDR einreisen durften, weil die DDR
keine Reparationen an Israel gezahlt hatte. Der Erzähler
beschloss sofort(immediately) mit seinem Freund Mischa nach
Ostberlin zu fahren. In der damaligen Sowjetunion musste man
Mitglied(a member) der kommunistischen Partei sein, um eine
gute Karriere zu haben, aber Mitgliedschaft in der Partei war
Juden verboten(prohibited). Der Erzähler (Kaminer) wählte die
DDR, da es einfacher war dorthin einzureisen als in andere
Länder; Fahrkarten waren billig(cheap) und man brauchte kein
Visum. Als Kaminer und Mischa in Berlin ankamen, wuden sie
als „Bürger jüdischer Abstammung“ offiziell anerkannt. Laut
Kaminer waren sie vom Rest der ostdeutschen Bevölkerung
nicht zu unterscheiden. Anfangs lebten sie in einem großen
Wohnblock für Ausländer in Marzahn, der zuvor der Stasi
