3.2 Pharmacy and OTC
medicines (37)
P and OTC Pseudoephedrine and ephedrine:
medicines legal ● Max amount legally sold: 720mg (12 tablets) of pseudoephedrine
issues (pg 37) OR 180mg of ephedrine

EHCs
● The pharmacist can provide advanced supply (ie: giving EHC prior
to unprotected sexual intercourse)
● The patient should be assessed to ensure that they are
competent, they intend to use the medicine appropriately and it is
clinically appropriate.

Paracetamol and aspirin
● Not more than 100 non-effervescent tablets or capsules can be
sold at one time but there are no limits on other formulations such
as effervescent tablets, powders, granules and liquids

Codeine and dihydrocodeine:
● Pack size has to be <32 dose units (those that are >32 are POM)
● Good practice to limit sale to only 1 pack
● PILs and Labels have to write “Can cause addiction, for 3 days
use only”

Cough and cold medicines for children
● Medicines that cannot be sold to children under 6 years for cough

, and could are:
○ Antitussives (reduce cough)- Dextromethorphan, pholcodine
○ Expectorants (thin and loosen mucus) - Guaifenesin,
ipecacuanha
○ Nasal decongestants - Ephedrine, oxymetazoline,
phenylephrine, pseudoephedrine, xylometazoline
○ Antihistamines [can be sold for allergies but not cough and
cold] - Brompheniramine, chlorphenamine, diphenhydramine,
doxylamine, promethazine, triprolidine
● Liquid OTC products containing codeine for dry cough not allowed
for anyone under 18 years

Reclassifications P → POM
● Voltarol diclofenac tablets
● Motilium

POM → P
● Esomeprazole
● Maloff protect (Antimalarial) - still need to check malaria status of
places that patient is travelling to
● Viagra Connect

GSL → P
Teething gels containing lidocaine - packaging will also be restricted to
10g




3.2.2 EHC
Contraception ● Levonelle for >16 years, within 3 days of intercourse
● Ella One can be used for any age, within 5 days of intercourse

Advance supply ● Pharmacists can provide an advance supply of EHC (i.e. prior
● to unprotected sexual intercourse)
● Patient should be assessed to ensure that they are competent

Under 16s ● Patient can buy EHC (Ella one) over the counter even if they are under the age
of 16
● Children under 13 are too young to consent (consider reporting abuse)
● Children under 16 also too young to consent (but exception if partner is of a
similar age)

Legal Basic prescription requirements
requirements 1. Patients name
2. Patient address
3. Patient age (if under 12)
4. Prescription date (less than 6 months)
5. Prescriber signature in indelible ink
6. Prescriber qualification (eg: doctor, dentist etc.)

Private prescription requirements
● Write prescription entry into POM book before dispensing

Additional requirements for private prescriptions for CDs sch 2 & 3
● Must be on standardized form - FP10PCD
● Prescriber identification number on script
● Scripts sent off with NHS scripts at the end of the month to
NHSBSA
● Some pharmacies keep photocopy
● No repeats allowed


Repeat provisions How many to dispense?
● Repeat x 2 = 3 prescription total (1 original dispensing + 2 repeat
dispensing)
● If number of repeats not stated, it can only be repeated once = 2
prescription total
○ Exception is oral contraceptives: can be repeated 5x = 6
prescription
○ CDs sch 2 & 3 are not repeatable
○ NHS prescriptions are also not repeatable
● Like normal prescriptions, the 1st prescription has to be dispensed
within 6 months, but there are no legal time limits for remaining
repeats (use professional judgement) - except schedule 4, which
has to be dispensed within 28 days
