1.1 Describe the following types of mental ill health according to the psychiatric
(DSM/ICD) classification system:
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) is a useful book for
psychiatrists and other health professionals because it defines and categorises the different
mental illnesses to improve diagnosis, treatment and research.
This tool is created by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) in the United States and
has changed a lot with time as it is revised periodically. The latest version of the DSM was
published in May of 2013.
It helps doctors and other mental health providers develop treatment plans for their
patients/clients.
The DSM-5 contains these three significant components:
1. The diagnostic categorisation
2. The diagnostic criteria
3. The descriptive text.
It describes possible symptoms of each disorder, as well as what to look out for when
diagnosing a person.
The International Classification of Diseases (ICD), produced by the World Health
Organisation (WHO), is another important diagnostic tool that is used to classify all illness
after diagnosis.
For example, it monitors causes of injury and death for clinical and research purposes,
including collecting and reporting health data, globally.
Moreover, the ICD-10 is consists of signs and symptoms of diseases as well as factors that
influence health status, additionally the social circumstances or other external causes of a
disease.
Nowadays the tenth revision is used. However, the newest version of ICD is the Eleventh
Revision (ICD-11) that was issued in June of 2018 to allow the all 193 WHO member
countries to prepare for application (as it needs to be translated into their national languages),
and it will formally come into force in January of 2022.
This can be called a ’system of medical coding’.
